Phosgene, which smells like moldy hay, is also an irritant but six times more deadly than chlorine gas. ... Phosgene was responsible for 85% of chemical-weapons fatalities during World War I. Mustard gas, a potent blistering agent, was dubbed King of the Battle Gases. Like phosgene, its effects are not immediate.03Lightningrocks wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 8:25 amI think it is the oil that travels through the system with the refrigerant that burns and becomes acidic as well. It is funny that you mentioned the smell of it. It is so true. I have had that stench linger in my nose for as much as two days after cleaning up a burnt system. I can almost detect the odor now without hooking up my gauges. It is awful. We use to talk about the smell of burning refrigerant as being comparable to mustard gas. LOL Burning refrigerant also creates phosgene gas, which could kill a person in high doses.RPBrown wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 8:17 amBurnt refrigerant generally comes from an internal short in the motor of the compressor. If you were ever to get a slight smell of burnt refrigerant you would never forget it, I promise.powerboatr wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 9:24 pm how does one BURN freon? did the compressor go into fry mode or just quit form loss of ground? thanks in advance

Doesn't freon create phosgene gas when burned?RPBrown wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 8:17 amBurnt refrigerant generally comes from an internal short in the motor of the compressor. Re: AC repair shock! There goes any stimulus check I may get.
I wondered if that strike back in February as I recall contributed. The AC guy said it was probably did. The problem is my deductible is more than the combined cost of replacing the TV's, appliances and phones, even with the compressor replacement costs. I just got my homeowner's renewal; my coverage was increased, but my deductible went up another $1000.03Lightningrocks wrote: ↑Sun May 24, 2020 3:52 pm puma guy, I was just looking through some older posts and realized you had previously made a post concerning an electrical issue created by a lightning strike. Later on you made a post concerning a compressor failure that was eating up your stimulus money. It hit me that the lighting strike probably caused the compressor failure. I don't know if you ever filed a claim for all your damages but if so you can add that compressor to the claim. It is not just possible but probable if they told you it had "burned/grounded" out.

Wish you were here in my area, I'd give you my business. I'll mention you to my son-in-law in Mansfield. He has several rent houses and three business locations.

Re: AC repair shock! There goes any stimulus check I may get.
I do most all my appliance, pool pumps, AC ( capacitors, fans relays, etc. ) and electrical repairs, but changing a compressor is a little out of my league these days. My son-in-law is like you; he decided he could replace their heat pump. I'll put it this way they were without heat most of this past winter. The final cost was just about what he'd have paid someone to do it.

Re: AC repair shock! There goes any stimulus check I may get.
I saw an ad for one called Bluon 22. Since I had to replace my condenser unit it was an R410 unit. Before the big hullabaloo about freon building AC's used R22 and auto and refrigeration used R12. I'm assuming R12 had the best cooling properties since the units were small and the load was tremendous on cars and refrigerators and freezers which now use R134.

Re: AC repair shock! There goes any stimulus check I may get.
Yep! R410 and all the new freons are less efficient than R12 and R22. I had replaced my evaporator a few months before I had to get to the new condensing unit. The new evaporator is rated for R410. When the guy removed the old evaporator he commented that it was the best coil he'd ever seen in a residence. He showed me how the flow was split into several individual passes going into the coil. That coil was installed in 1974.johncanfield wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 4:42 pm R22 is a more efficient refrigerant than the current R410a which has to operate at a higher pressure. My HVAC guy said new evaporators don't last as they used to due to poorer build quality and the higher pressures.

Re: AC repair shock! There goes any stimulus check I may get.
All I can do now is be very pragmatic and pay the piper. The warranty is for all parts for 10 years through the manufacturer, not the AC guy. As I looked up my warranty I saw the manufacturer offers an extended warranty, but the installer didn't inform me nor was is apparent when I registered my unit. It uses the new environmentally approved freon so that's some consolation; could have been R-22 which is eleventy million dollars a poundMel wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 3:07 pmSounds to me like you need a new HVAC guy. My Guy warranties everything for 5 years. Plus the 10 years on the compressor.puma guy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 2:46 pm My 3 year old 5 ton AC quit working yesterday evening. I have a little knowledge and figured it was a shorted/grounded compressor, which is covered by the 10 year warranty. The original installer came today thank goodness and sure enough it was a grounded compressor. Part is covered but compressor labor is $850 and he said freon is burned so will need a flush, freon, and dryer plus labor for that. How is this firearms related you may ask? All totaled cost 1200 bucks! Won't be getting any new guns!![]()
My original unit lasted a little over 21 years.
