But the guide is supposed to be out front! I don't really blame you, though; Treacherous beasts from what I've read.

The ported barrel model was only available a couple of years. You are right about the blast. I have been next to shooters with them and it's acoustically and physically uncomfortable. I just move or quit if no other bench is available.

One for TAM and Andy C and the .45-70

Saw this on a Marlin forum. TAM you may need to book a trip and let Andy be your guide!
45-70 Gov't in Africa

Good day fellow 45-70 owners , I am new to the forum . Thought I would share my gun and my use for my gun in Africa. I live and hunt in Southern Africa and love my 45-70, although I own a lot if big calibers like 375 ’s, 416, and 500NE, the 45-70 is my favourite. I use it for back-up on Leopard, Lion, and buffalo, even have used it on Elephant and believe me it pounded it to the Ground. I use a few different Loads ranging from 343gr peregrine softs and solids @ 2100ft/s, 400gr cutting edge solids@ 1850ft/s, hard cast Lead 400gr @1950 and hard cast Lead 500gr @ 1600ft/s. It is a lovely gun to shoot and it's Quick and nimble.
