I did not care for Froglube or Ballistil. I still mainly use 50/50 Hopes and Kroil. No I don't use gloves, I have spent the majority of my life in chemical plants so cleaning solvents won't do any more harm than my daily work routine. I use the solvent as cologne anyway so I don't mind the smell.DanD wrote:I have been using M-Pro 7 Gun Cleaner. It's non-toxic, environmentally safe, does a really good job at removing carbon and it does not stink.

Edited to add that the M-Pro 7 Gun Cleaner has no odor. Here is an explanation as to why http://www.mpro7.com/if-it-doesnt-smell ... -work.html

Proabably tetrachloride or trichloroethane. The refinery I worked at produced aromatic hydrocarbons, one of them was pure benzene and all the old timers used it to clean oil and grease from their tools as well as their hands and arms. We don't have numbers on how many died of leukemia!Lena wrote:Never have yet, in the service we had to soak the 6 barrels from the M134's in carbon remover which would literally freeze your hands and bleach them white when you removed them, I don't remember what it really was but it sure cleaned them great. I bet now you would have to have a boo suit to use that stuff.

Nitrile is what we used in the Analytical Lab at the refinery in which I worked for general purpose for their chemical resistance and rip strength. We had special gloves for aromatics (Viton I think) and as well as PVC for acids. As Charles stated Nitrile is perfectly suited for cleaning firearms. You can get Nitrile gloves at Harborfreight is varying thicknesses.Charles L. Cotton wrote:This sounds like blue Nitrile gloves. If so, stick with the Nitrile. I used the regular gloves, but they never held up for a full strip/clean of a 1911. Even double-gloving often saw me down uncovered fingers by the end. Nitrile holds up to solvents much better.george72 wrote:I use blue medical gloves that I was given and when they run out I'll use some cheap replacements. Plenty of lead and other toxins in our guns to be careful of especially with kids in the house etc.
I didn't use gloves for many years, but then I heard our modern day Plato, Willie Nelson, say that "if I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself." Well, if Willie says it, it must be true, right?
