We ran it for 33¢ bx/50 in the 60's and early 70's.
From a small town here but sure remember all the filling stations just about sold ammo, hardware stores and some grocery stores. All the 7-11 stores and the like also had it, I even remember several barber shops and 1 TV retailer in Dallas.
We had an all night Texaco station that was almost a sporting goods store back in the 60's. No guns that I remember, but any common ammo, licenses, fishing gear, frog gigs and crab nets, etc. Also, though we just called them the "little store" (now it's a called a convenience store) I could buy .22 shells for about 75¢ at our little store. You could take a chance on winning some money by buying a tube of salted Spanish peanuts if you felt lucky. I actually won a quarter in a package once. Kids could buy ammo and gamble at the same time.
We seemed to turn out OK. BTW I forgot to mention PSA has Federal .22 LR Automatch for $13.99/325 rounds.
