Several years ago I bought myself a Mossberg .410, intending it to be my dove gun, as I
was becoming so efficient and deadly with my side-by 20 ga. I was also looking forward
to re-capturing those days of yore when I ventured into the field with my first shotgun, a
JC Higgins bolt-action .410, a scourge on the bird population.
Well, lemme tell you, that was a humbing experience. heck, some of the dove I was shootin'
at just lit and started walkin'.
That little Mossberg awaits the next expert in the family.

First 25 shells I shot on the practice trap to see where it shot, how it handled, etc. Fired the first 10 shots mounted to test for fit, then the next 15 from gun-down position, snapping it up into place to see if the fit held true under pressure; it did.
Ambled off to the skeet-range and shot a round by myself; it was windy as all get-out so I was a bit apprehensive. I shot a 20 - not shabby at all for:
...a new gun
...in .410 (2 1/2" shell, 1/2oz load, #9s)
...on a windy day
...unmounted

Re: Bought a .410 double
I had no problem finding it. Win AA 2-1/2", 1/2 OZ #9 shot for 10 bucks. It is a little more costly than 12 Ga AA which goes for 7-9 bucksVMI77 wrote:Say what? I'm with you on price, but I've never had any problem finding any kind of .410.....slugs, buckshot, birdshot....all readily available. I think the last .410 birdshot I bought at Wally World was $12 a box of 25.mr surveyor wrote:I hope you guys are set up to roll your own. Seems that .410 shot shells are neither readily available nor affordable. When I was younger my old J.C. Higgins .410 was my favorite rabbit and coon hunting gun. That was when .410 shells were half the cost of 12 ga, rather than twice the price.

Re: Bought a .410 double
Andy, That's so cool. It looks really nice. I notice it has a pistol grip rather than a straight English style butt stock. I like that. What's the barrel length? . Did you buy skeet chokes for it? Sorry for all the questions. Need to get an Elm Fork shoot going! I'll shoot yours if you'll shoot mine!
