Yes, though referred to as "remaining" or "twinless".
Since my brother was born 15 minutes before me he always refers to me as the twin and himself as the original.

Re: Word use that drives you up the wall!

Being one myself I am always perplexed as to how many folk are referenced when some one says " a pair of twins". Is it two or four?

 Nope! No green lizard either! It's amazing anything with "government employees" in the name could be successful. Which reminds me of a word use that drives me up the wall "political ethics".
I may have already posted that :headscratch

I suffer from RSD and one of the symptoms is short term memory loss. I also suffer from short term memory loss as a result of RSD.

I understand your frustration. The stuff Dairy Queen serves in there combs isn't ice cream. :biggrinjester:
True, but a Blizzard with your favorite add-in on a hot summer evening is hard to beat. DQ is a Texas company too. Medium Cookie Dough Blizzard with extra stuff. Yumm!

Man I really hate to melt your Blizzard, but Dairy Queen started in Illinois and is now headquartered in Minnesota. Just goes to show how effective advertising can be! Kind of like Texas and Armadillos the myth lives on.

It's happened at a number of places. They no longer ask "How is everything?" I guess they don't want to open the door to complaints of any nature other than the food.
eggsactly.
Well here's an Eggs-ample of misuse of words. "The Broken Yolk" cafe. My bro and I went in and he ordered his eggs hard cooked with broken yolks. He got two eggs sunny side up and that was after we waited 15 minutes for our food. He hasn't been back there, but I gave them one more chance with my wife in tow and the service was just as slow and both our orders were totally wrong. The sign still says Broken Yolk even though they apparently don't know the definition of the term. "rlol"

Re: Word use that drives you up the wall!

Maybe already posted, but the word genius being used inappropriately irks me to no end. I even hear it used to describe actors and entertainers???????????
Marvin Gaye (who I enjoyed immensely) was described as a "genius" I'm sorry, but someone singing or acting other peoples words or songs is hardly qualification for genius.

Redneck_Buddha wrote:Here's a list of pet-peeve pleonasms, from the Department of Redundancy Department. Not only are they redundancies that are strung together, but they also contain a bunch of words that are unnecessary:

-"Pre-planning"

-"End result"
-"Totally necessary"
-"Basic fundamentals"
-"Circulating around"
-"Close proximity"
-"Pair of twins"
-"Dual tandem"
-"Unsolved mystery"
-"True facts"
-"Rio Grande River"
-"Somewhat unique"

Some of these may be open for debate.

While we are at it, let's give a thought to these phrases and words:

"Chalant" (in case you really do care)
"I've told you a million times, stop exaggerating!"
"Half the lies we are told are untrue."
"It's deja vu all over again" - Yogi Berra
"When you hit a fork in the road, take it" - also Y.B.
"If we do not succeed, the risk of failure greatly increases."
I have always said. "Do not be redundant, repeat yourself, other wise state it, or say it more than once anyway."

Re: Word use that drives you up the wall!

The Annoyed Man wrote:"Orientated." The original correct word when I was in high school was "Oriented," and one might have an "Orientation." As in...."he was oriented to place and time," or "I had to attend a campus orientation lecture before starting classes." People, places and things had "orientation" relative to one another, a status they arrived at by becoming oriented to one another. Misuse of the word used to drive my dad crazy, and he had two Literature PhDs and taught at a prestigious university. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he probably knew more about the proper use of the language than 99,999 out of any 100,000 people. As the educational system gradually dumbed us down, "orientated" became so commonly used that it finally officially entered the lexicon. I'll bet that you would not have found the word "orientated" in a mid 1960s dictionary.

Re: Word use that drives you up the wall!

I hate when the word unique has a modifier. very unique, somewhat unique, pretty unique, etc. the word is like dead, either you are or you aren't

Return to “Word use that drives you up the wall!”
