Thank you. I don't know if I'll waste anymore time with this or not.RottenApple wrote:It is for MasterCard and Visa. 5.8.4 Additional Cardholder Identification
A Merchant must not refuse to complete a Transaction solely because a Cardholder who has complied with the conditions for presentment of a Card at the POI refuses to provide additional identification information, except as specifically permitted or required by the Standards. A Merchant may require additional identification from the Cardholder if the information is required to complete the Transaction, such as for shipping purposes. A Merchant in a country or region that supports use of the MasterCard Address Verification Service (AVS) may require the Cardholder’s ZIP or postal code to complete a Cardholder-Activated Terminal (CAT) Transaction, or the Cardholder’s address and ZIP or postal code to complete a mail order, phone order, or e-commerce Transaction. For myself, I don't show ID unless it is legally required for the purchase (such as alcohol, tobacco, etc.). Showing ID is a useless waste of time (albeit not much) and gives people a false sense of security. If showing ID for credit card purchases is so important to prevent credit card fraud and/or identity theft, then why is it not required for purchases online, over the phone, or by snail mail?Visa (page 428) http://usa.visa.com/download/merchants/ ... s-main.pdf:
Supplemental Identification - U.S. Region
A U.S. Acquirer must not, as a regular practice, require a Merchant, and a Merchant must not require a Cardholder, to provide any supplementary Cardholder information as a condition for honoring a Visa Card or Visa Electron Card, unless it is required or permitted elsewhere in the U.S. Regional Operating Regulations. Such supplementary Cardholder information includes, but is not limited to:
•Social Security Number (or any part thereof)
• Fingerprint
• Home or business address or telephone number
• Driver's license number
• Photocopy of a driver's license
• Photocopy of the Visa Card or Visa Electron Card
• Other credit cards

Re: Accidently "exposed" My CHL - almost humorous
Most of the time I appreciate getting ID'd for a charge sale and I actually thank them. In this case besides being in a hurry, the guy that insisted I show ID wasn't even waiting on me. The item only cost 8 dollars and some change. I could use my debit/credit card as a debit with no ID. A debit transaction has no protection for the consumer. I know that for certain when my brand new debit card was used 5 hours later after I bought something. They somehow managed to get my PIN and bought a few items and got cash.
Many places I use a CC don't even require a signature for less than 50 dollars so it's not about security.
I usually let things like this slide but the guy was just a jerk and butting in. Radio Shack used to have a data base of names and phone numbers and they asked for it to keep track of your purchases. Whether it's a good idea or not to require picture id wasn't really my question. I was trying to find out if it's a violation of their covenant/agreement with the credit card issuer.

Re: Accidently "exposed" My CHL - almost humorous
Sorry to bring up an old thread but did you ever look up the ID requirement at your job. I was in Radio Shack trying to use my CC's today and wasn't in a particularly good mood and in a hurry. The guy wanted my DL to use any credit card. I called both Mastercard and Visa on the spot amd they weren't helpful at all, saying it's not their policy but it may be store policy. I decided to use Amex and the guy then required my CID # and I absolutely refused. I told him their is no way he's getting the security code off my CC. He told me it wasn't a security code it's a CID. Duh! I called Amex after I left and they couldn't understand why a FTF retailer would need it and I was right to refuse. I'm just wondering who I would write to report Visa and MC refusals for lack of ID.zero4o3 wrote:I will see if I can look up the source info next time I am at that job, I have a part time job at bestbuy which I have worked at for close to 5 years now, about 2 years ago we updated our policy and they may have cited the clause, during training we were told the compnay could be liable for up to a 10,000 dollar fine for breaking our agreements with the credit card companys be it visa / mastercard / who ever they all have similar policysMcKnife wrote:Just want to clarify... When it comes to checking ID/Phone #'s/Zip Codes, I estimate 90% of the time I am met with "deer in headlights" look by cashiers and I complete my transaction without any further chitchat. The other 10% of the time, retailers will insist on checking ID and I tell them no. They will not process the transaction so I either pay with cash or I leave for their competitor. It has potential to be inconvenient, but I am sick and tired of trying to prove I am a good guy.
If I am ever "exposed," you said it best... don't argue with fools. Simply ignore them and carry about.
Examples:
THEM: May I have your zip code? ME: No, you may not.
THEM: May I see you Drivers License? ME: No, you may not. THEM: Why not? ME: My Drivers License is none of your business. THEM: Uhhhh.... *paging Manager*
zero4o3 wrote: they are actually subject to a fine if you report the retailer for asking for ID, and refusing your purchase to your credit card holder
Edit
some one already beat me to this I didnt want to read the entire threat at first, oh well
I never knew about that!!! Do you have a source? I would like to learn more.
I will add that we are allowed to verify your license and ask you to sign an unsigned card before accepting it, and in most cases we are required to verify the last 4 digits on the card, this is to prevent credit card fraud

Never thought about that, but at any rate; like my dad always told me "Never argue with a fool."TexasGal wrote:It is so tempting to respond to a moron like that with an education in the CHL license being a legal ID, but Eric Holder was supposedly doing much the same trying to educate another moron on the legality of his carrying inside costco mere minutes before his life ended. It appears my OP has suffered "identity theft" . It was about the person's obvious bias, misconceptions and ignorance about CHL holders. I have to admit I enjoyed reading all the posts. I have known too many LEO's in my lifetime, including Chiefs, to have believed any of what she said about being a peace officer. My "partner" who is actually my twin brother engaged the woman to no avail and she did seem to pull back when he responded to her no carry comment by informing her our grandfather was an NYPD Detective from the 20's to WWII and was required to carry at all times.puma guy wrote:Yeah. Sometimes I look at my wife and say, "Remind me real quick, what name are we using this week?"

The credit people when called, asked "Is he standing only upon his left foot with his right foot off the floor?" (That's the condition I had them check to verify my identity) and cashiers would look at me and laugh and say into the phone "yes" and then the credit Dept approved the purchase. It not only protected my card from unauthorized use by my Ex, but gave me an opportunity to tell cashiers why that happened and indicate that I was now single.
I guess I could have just had them ask for ID, but that was more fun.

Re: Accidently "exposed" My CHL - almost humorous
I too say thank you when ID'd for a credit card purchase. However.....in this case it didn't come to mind. I didn't admit this in my OP but I was thinking about my CCW because I'd left it in the console. Duh! Slap Palm on Forehead!terryg wrote:The Annoyed Man wrote:I don't mind showing ID when I pay with a card because I have been the victim of identity theft more than once. I'm grateful that they ask. when they ask for ID with my credit card, I always say "Thank you for asking." it is way too easy to spend other peoples money these days.

I really don't mind showing my DL when I use a credit card. Some places nowadays don't even require a signature so I actually appreciate when they actually verify I am the owner of the card. I was with another person and really hadn't planned to make a purchase and happened to be out of cash. This person is obviuosly not nor has ever been a peace officer and is extemely prejudiced.McKnife wrote:I hope this doesn't sound rude, but when I am confronted by situations where retailers request my ID and/or want to verify my receipts and purchases, I simply tell them to mind their own business. I have argued a few times in banks when I presented a check drawn on an account in their bank where I am not a "customer". When they insist on several different types of ID I politely inform them a State issued DL is an official ID and I don't need additional picture ID nor am I about to give them access to a credit card number for ID purposes. They of course argue that it's policy so I ask them where that policy is stated on the check I have in my hand. If you press hard enough a DL is sufficient. If they really annoy me I make them check the bills to see if they're counterfeit.

Accidently "exposed" My CHL - almost humorous
Today I was making a purchase at an electonic parts outlet and when I was asked for an ID Iflipped open my wallet and showed my ID. The lady asked me "what's that?" and without looking closely I said my driver's license. She said no it's not, so I took it out and showed her. I then realized it was my CHL. I told her I was sorry about that and she responded "No you're not". I said excuse me but it was a mistake and at any rate is considered ID. She said it wasn't. I was already taking out my DL sensing and trying to avoid an argument. She said you guys are always trying to show your .......... and she hesitated. I knew what she was about to say. I politely showed her my DL and told her actually I have had a pistol in my face twice and that's why I am licensed. She again said no it's not and told me she had experienced that as peace officer (now ex peace officer). I was always told don't argue with a fool so I remained quiet but my partner piped up "Then you know why someone would carry". She then explained to him she never carried because not all peace officers carry. I pulled him away after I signed the receipt and grabbed my merchandise because he was about to tred where only fools go. I wish I had had some statistics regarding gender breakdown for CHL's but then again it most likely would've accomplished little. As I left I tried to imagine her as a peace officer with a badge displaying that funny symbol instead of a star or PDD and number.
" Stop right there I am PEACE officer."
" Stop right there I am PEACE officer."
