The bit I've bolded isn't always true. When I went to get my DL they delighted in repeatedly asking me to submit irrelevant documents, even though they'd seen them before. They also failed me on the test, one time, for striking another vehicle, while the car was stationary. Eventually, I figured out that the trick was to apply in a city, not a small town where they didn't want foreigners "taking their jobs".chasfm11 wrote:AndyC wrote:I didn't - what kind of proof did they want? IIRC, all I had to give them was a SSN.chasfm11 wrote:I had to produce proof of citizenship in order to get my driver's license.

They only require it once but they do require it. Perhaps you did yours a while ago. I was a transfer to Texas and exchanged a license from another State. My wife went through the same thing. Our passports worked fine.

The author's thesis reminded me of something, but I couldn't think what. I remember now - it was Brecht's poem, "Die Lösung" (The Solution), about the aftermath of the 1953 uprising in E. Germany. I had to look it up, but here it is:AndyC wrote:Indeed.chartreuse wrote:Very interesting reading, thanks Andy.

From the same article:
"If an organizeable mass of Americans comes to suspect that mass immigration from Latin America is being used by the political class to undermine their democracy and as a tool to liberate the political elites from the Jeffersonian and Madisonian constraints, then indeed we may witness a reaction"
After the uprising of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had thrown away the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

Re: "Arizona style" Immigration Bill Filed in Texas
There was an article in Texas Monthly, recently, that argued that the real reason "seasoned politicians" have a problem with getting off the fence is not Hispanic voters (it claimed that, on the whole, US citizens and legal residents of Hispanic origin are more likely to be tough on illegal immigration), but rather big business donors who depend on cheap, illegal, labour.drjoker wrote:Of course. Ole Rick is a seasoned politician. He won't back this bill if there's a negative backlash from the Hispanic community. I heard somewhere that Hispanics are the biggest minority in Texas.texanron wrote:http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/te ... -crackdown
Rick Perry is not quite on board yet.
