I finally decided to go back to using an old-school wind-up/self-winding watch. Been happy with it ever since. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this watch to somebody who was going to be in a risky and physically demanding profession…as long as he can live with it being off by a minute each week.
I bought a self-winding Seiko in the early 70's when I was in Vietnam. I had it cleaned every ten years and it lasted a little over 30 years, so I bought another one almost 20 years ago. The first one had an internal spring that wound up with movement. The newer one has a small generator that charges a capacitor driving a quartz movement. It gains 4 seconds a day, or about a half minute per week. I have had to replace the capacitor once so far at about the eight year mark. It's pretty rugged and I'm very satisfied with it.

I like the one TAM shows, it looks like the hands have good contrast with the face so that it can be easily read in low light conditions.
