Yes, but only their own guns. A pistol license in NY lists your firearms, and those are the only ones allowed in you possession. Anytime you buy a new gun it has to be added to the license. Its a real pain. BTW, even then you can't carry in NYC, which is another permit.

It's a real shame NY has become like this. My family lived in upstate NY from 1979-1984 and I had no idea it was like this then if it was. My dad never registered any of his guns that I'm aware of and even bought a couple while we were there. I still have one of the Marlin semi-auto .22 rifle he bought for me when I was 15.

Any idea how long it has been this way?

I lived in upstate NY from '79-'83 and it's a beautiful state. I would love to take the family back up there to visit, but won't for these reasons. There is so much really cool history in that entire region, but I don't foresee being able to get back up there any time soon.
