Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
My copy of Julian Hatcher's Book of the Garand arrived yesterday. I only made it through the first two chapters last night. This is supposed to be, pretty much, the Garand bible, so I've got some really good reading ahead of me.

Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
Thanks. I have already seen that. lol You showed us that link on page 2 of this thread. I decided not to get that, for now at least, and stick with ammo safe to shoot in it as it is.gmckinl wrote:Read this if you haven't already...C-dub wrote:I've been seeing a bunch of 30-06 150gr. ammo on the shelves lately. Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
I did manage to get one of those 500 round cans from Cabelas last month and figured it would last quite a while, but it sure is fun to shoot. I may have to get some of that CMP stuff if I'm going to keep shooting it. Their price is supposed to be more reasonable than most. The Annoyed Man wrote:Well I'm certainly no expert on it. I used to own an M1A, and the mechanisms are for all practical purposes identical. With the M1A, too high pressures can damage the gun, and the damage usually centers around bending the operating rod. I've heard of things like shearing off the bolt lugs, but I can't imagine what kind of abuse you'd have to give it to do that. They are, after all, battle rifles and they are supposed to be rugged and reliable. The two things that will cause high pressures are really hot loads, and really heavy bullets. I don't know if high pressures can adversely effect the timing of the ignition/ejection/reloading cycle or not, but it is something to consider, as might be any damaging changes to headspacing and stuff like that. G26ster is a fountain of knowledge about Garands, and I know there are others on this board as well.C-dub wrote:Thanks TAM. I guess I still have a bunch of reading to do on this rifle. The Annoyed Man wrote:Absolutely yes, as long as the charge isn't too heavy. But the 3 grain difference between a 147 grain and a 150 grain pill is negligible. I would guess that any 150 grain load that produces the same muzzle velocity in the same length barrel with the same twist rate as a Garand that is produced by a 147 grain bullet in a Garand is probably safe for a Garand. I doubt that the 3 grain difference in weight would make that much difference in the pressure.C-dub wrote:I've been seeing a bunch of 30-06 150gr. ammo on the shelves lately. Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
Thank you very much!Hamourkiller wrote:If you pull the factory ammo bullet and weigh the powder, you will know if it will work in the M1 Garand. 52 grs or less should be good to go. Powder charge weight is what gets the op rod. A slow burn powder takes large amounts to get good velocity. Medium burn rates take around 50 grs to get good velocity. So if the factory load has the 50 to 52 gr charge it will work good with the Garand.C-dub wrote:Hold on a second. Are you talking about modern ammunition? Does anyone concur with this?Hamourkiller wrote:I think you enjoy will the rifle and shooting the normal Winchester and Remington 150 gr Factory loads will not harm the beast.
If you faint at the prospect that the op rod will bend and jump out and beat you up, well get an adjustable gas screw and tame the beast.
Some people would have the M1 loaded down to 300 savage levels for fear of the op rod, I just keep my powders around 50 grs and my bullets at 150 to 168 and target 2700 fps for the 168 and 2800 for the 150 gr bullets.
Have fun and enjoy the rifle.
I don't have any reloading equipment yet, so I'm not up to pulling anything. I could get an adjustable gas screw, but think I would rather keep it as is and just get safe ammo until I can reload my own.

Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
Thanks. I've seen that Korean stuff and they were pretty honest about the corrosion issue. I figured I'd stay away from the possibly or probably corroded stuff.9mmfan wrote:Just to add more food for thought on a ton of other information, you might want to read up on the Korean surplus ammo. I am by no means an expert, but the ammo bearing the "KA" headstamp is all corrosively primed, as is my understanding. If'n it is headstamped PS, it should not be corrosive, but there are certain lots that some folks have reported some problems. I just glanced at that, as the only Korean M2 that I bought was found to have the dreaded "KA". This was not something I wanted to deal with, so's I gave the bandoliers worth to a buddy that didn't care one way or the other. He was kind enough to give me a cartridge belt and some other miscellany when I got my rifle, so I thought it was the fair thing to do. I ramble.
Just to wrap up, remember
KA=Korrosive Ammo
PS=Probably Safe (If you google "PS Korean M2 problems, you will undoubtedly find the exhaustive list of lot numbers. I think it was over to the CMP forums that I saw it.)
+1 on the current (hopefully) Greek surplus from the CMP. $98 plus shipping ('round $11, if I am remembering correctly), for 200 rounds, give or take, shipped in an ammo can.

That's not too bad. Thanks. I may get over there in a week or two to check that out. I need to get some before going to see my dad because he's going to want to shoot it.olafpfj wrote:Was at the FW cabelas today and there were cans of M1 Garand ball in abundance. Around $400 for 500 rds.

Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
Everyone, THANKS for all the info and educating me on my new rifle. It is greatly appreciated!!!
I'm definitely not putting any more modern stuff through it. Is any 150gr labeled "M2 Ball" okay or does it need to specifically say for the Garand? Checking around I find some Korean M2 Ball milsurp stuff and some other stuff that specifically says Garand ammo.

You can buy and put in or have an adjustable gas plug installed.
Cabela's does sell some of the "garand" 30.06 in bulk too. The CMP stuff is a very good buy!

I've only put 40 rounds through it so far. All Remington 150 grain I think. What kind of problems are we talking about here?

Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
I saw 4 boxes of Remington yesterday at WalMart in Carrollton. Two 150gr and two 180gr., but I was in kind of a hurry and there wasn't anyone around to get them out and I left them for someone else. I think they were just under $18 for 20.77346 wrote: I have 30-06 ammo... but 200 @ $98 + S&H for Greek surplus sounds like a heck of a deal... Academy wanted $35 for 20 rnds of Hornady (the hunting stuff)... I have enough 30-06 but I can always use a bit more!

Re: M1 Garand sighting in today.
That sounds like a good idea if the rifle is in bad shape. I see they can also do 1903A3's. Unfortunately, my 1903 is not an A3.77346 wrote:I finally decided to pull the trigger on a M1 Garand and mailed the ordering form and additional documents to CMP today. Looks like a 2-3 month wait at the moment and they only have H&R's on field and service grades.
Depending on a. if I get one, and b. how it looks and its history, I may get it restored at James River Armory

I'm going to hit some of the gun shows coming up to see if anyone has something there.
