Re: New Patrol Rifle time

I came across this again searching for something else.

What's the latest GigAg? Have you ordered or received your rifle yet?

Good price too.

I emailed DD seeing if I can order one like that. If not, I may end up doing an upper/lower pairing.
I didn't realize the 14.5 inch barrel was that big of a problem as long as the flash hider was permanently affixed to reach the 16 inch mark.
It's not an NFA problem - it is more of a keeping it simple thing while they try and meet demand.
Well, if I would have ended up going the RUC route I would have ordered the RUC14.5 with the pinned flash hider and just suffered the wait. I hope you are able to find something soon and don't have to wait too long to get it.

I know what you mean. I don't know how that guy up in KS got what I was looking for in the short time he did. It was less than two weeks from the time I contacted him to when I walked into his shop. He didn't have "my rifle" when we e-mailed and said he's only gotten in 4 days before I came in.

You may just have to order and wait. Sorry. Have you at least decided on something someone will actually make for you?

Re: New Patrol Rifle time

Very nice rifle. I noticed you went with a non-chromed barrel and all that. Do you not plan on putting that many rounds through it? Was it more the weight that swayed you to this rifle versus the RUC? I wonder how much lighter than that 6.25 pounds it will be when you get the shorter barrel and shorter guards?

Re: New Patrol Rifle time

Ended up getting it for $1250 and his last pmag he had on the wall. His ammo was high at .50/round and I was going to pass and check Walmart, but he threw in two 20 boxes of some 55gr Federal stuff.

I shot 20 rounds today. First three were high and left. Adjusted the sights and put the next 3 in the bull. COOL! Moved back to around 30 yards from about 15 for the rest. Nice rifle. I'm happy.

Re: New Patrol Rifle time

Up in Kansas and went by my favorite gun shop up here this morning.

They have a Colt LE6920MP-R they just got in last week. It is still in the box and they didn't have a price on it yet. The owner finally came in and caled me back. He's asking $1350 for it. This seems reasonable and what everyone else is asking for them. I'm really thinking about going through with this today unless someone can tell me that the RUC 14.5 or 16 is that much better for $150 more. I'm thinking this is a decent price and, who knows, I might even get him a little lower since I have cash or I might be able to get him to throw in a couple more mags or a light. I don't want to disrespect him by asking for too much if this is a reasonable price for a good rifle.

What do ya'll think?

Have you decided on anything yet? That BCM is looking pretty hard to get a hold of, while the RUC website says only a 2-4 week wait for shipment. I'm kinda hooked on the RUC, but now have to decide on the 14.5" (16" OAL) or 16" that is probably 17.5" OAL, but they don't say. And standard or lightweight barrel.

Anyone got any opinions on the different lengths and barrel weights for this rifle? I doubt there would be any significant difference, but IDK. Why else would they even offer them like that?

At this point, I think I'll have to see a pretty good deal on a Colt, while I'm up in Kansas, to change my mind.

Re: New Patrol Rifle time

BTW, what is that big fixed front sight for anyway? Does it serve any other purpose? I think I like the cleaner look of the guns without it. Plus, isn't it in the way if other optics are added onto that top rail?

I went and looked at those this morning. I'm at work now and just about anything gun related is blocked by our firewall. I'll check more tonight. They also looked good. Key differences I can remember is one them had two stage trigger, which I thought was not much desired in a patrol/combat rifle and the other more noticable thing was the front sight. The BCM has that A2 style elevated front sight and RUC and Larue do not. Also, one those had that 1:8 twist, but that might not be a deciding factor. I'll look around some more and it might just come down to availability. Now that you guys have opened my eyes a little more the differences between some of these guns might only be a matter of personal preference.

Re: New Patrol Rifle time

GigAg, have you decided yet? I'm leaning toward the BCM EAG and went up to the Cheaper Than Dirt store this afternoon to fondle, I mean handle it, but they don't have it in the store. It's in the/a warehouse. That M4 Mod2 looks nice, but everyone else thinks so too and no one has them and they won't back order them. Their prices seemed pretty decent on a lot of the things I saw there today. I'm going to browse through more of the stuff they have and I might decide sometime this week.

remington79 wrote:The 1:7 would be the twist rate to go. It will stabilize the heavier rounds better. The heavier rounds have better penetration. One of the guys at work was in the Army for a long period of time and he is an avid shooter. He didn't notice much if any difference using the lighter 55 grain rounds or the heavier 62 grain rounds through the 1:7 twist rate barrel. With the faster twist you can use the 77 grain open tipped rounds.
Interesting. So, the higher twist rate is needed to stabilize the heavier rounds, but will still fire the lighter ones good or just as good as the lower twist rates. Okay, good to know. I wasn't sure, but had thought the higher twist rate wouldn't be good for the lighter rounds.

What grains? Since I've read that the heavier grains fly better in the higher twist rate of 1:7 is that why this twist rate is supposedly better or maybe more correctly described as more desirable in a fighting/battle rifle?

Oh decisions...
GigAg, do you have to use department ammo? Or do you have to buy your own, but from a list of approved choices?

For efficacy and or home defense isn't the higher twist rate better for heavier rounds? Are these heavier rounds better for stopping someone instead of the lighter rounds that would fly better in the 1:9 twist rifles?

Re: New Patrol Rifle time

I'm also liking that BCM EAG Tactical. Is all the extra stuff worth the extra $700?

EDIT: Changed the price difference. I had it $200 higher.
