Just returned from my doc this morning. I thought about carrying inside, since they still have the old sign that says it's illegal to carry in there from before they were required to post 30.06. I could have, but knew I would be taking my jacket and shirt off for the exam and didn't feel up to the discussion. It's just as well, I ended up getting a shot in the rear and my pants may have dropped a little bit more if I'd had any extra weight on my belt.
Anyway, while waiting in the exam room I checked out the magazine selection and found two different gun magazines. Both were mainly handgun related, but I don't remember the titles. I don't read them very much so I'm not that familiar with the different ones. I was reading an article about increasing accuracy when the doc walked in. No questions at all except for why I was there in the first place. I have carried in when taking my wife there and to my daughter's doc before. And also to the dentist.

Re: allowed to carry inside clinic/doctors office?
Appologies DrinkRaideraid.
At first I thought you were using UTSW interchangably with Parkland, but actually I think we are both saying the same things. I received my degree from UTSW and remember when the bullet-proof glass went up in the ER. Is it still there? I did rotations at Parkland and a couple other hospitals in the area, but this was before I got my CHL.

Re: allowed to carry inside clinic/doctors office?
They sure do. And they are sort of correct. I cannot carry into any of the University's buildings. However, I can park on their campus and leave my weapon in my car unless they also have the parking lots properly posted. I can also drive through the campus with my weapon concealed on my hip and there's nothing they can do about it. I can even walk around on the campus as long as I do not enter any of the buildings while carrying. I don't think the parking garage falls within the definition of a building or structure for these purposes. Anyone?
This all still does not apply to the hospital as it is not "The University". Parkland Hospital is affiliated with UT-Southwestern, but not owned by them like St.Paul or Zale. I've worked in a few hospitals and teaching goes on in almost all hospitals. Just about any hospital that is anywhere near a school that teaches nurses or any other medical professional allows these students to come in and do rotations with already licensed nurses and doctors. This does not make the hospital a school.
It is obvious that the campus police do not want weapons on their campus, but they are not accurate in their statement. As many have said here before, the police are not always the best source for legal advice. Some are, but most are not. When I first got my CHL I encountered a Dallas Seargent that didn't even know what that was or that the state was issuing licenses to civilians to carry concealed handguns. And this was in 2002.

Another thread discussed this a while back with no clear definitive answer.

Re: allowed to carry inside clinic/doctors office?
Really? I'm not so sure about this one. UT-Southwestern is associated/affiliated with Parkland Hospital, which is a County Hospital. As a government owned facility, I'm not positive about ownership, are they even able to legally post a 30.06?DrinkRaiderade wrote:A University owned Hospital/medical center/clinic does not have to post 30.06 to restrict carry, thus you can't carry there...
Examples-UT Southwestern, UTMB, UTHSC, TTUHSC, UTMD Anderson, Texas A&M HSC, etc
