Well, I have an 870, and several other pumps as well, so I am prejudiced to begin with. But what they told me when I was a little sprout was that all the semi-auto did was burn ammo. With the SA, if you miss the first shot, you almost certainly are going to miss with the second two, the inclination being to just get enough lead up in the air and you will certainly hit something. Having to take the time to shuck the shell slows you down enough to take the time to re-aim and think again about how much to lead, etc.

It may have just been my Dad rationalizing why we didn't have expensive semi-autos like my uncle did - but for most people that seems to work out that way. My uncle was a dead eye shot with his, but most folks I've hunted with who had semi-autos would not hit more, they just burned more shells. Plus - you just cannot beat that sound of jacking another round in, most comforting sound in the world.
