Cyphur, I'm glad you started this thread because my thoughts are on a possible 1911 carry, just like you. To begin with let me tell you that before February of this year, I have a couple handguns "for home protection" that I probably would shoot 50 rounds every other year if ever..That's the extend of my firearm experience..
Now, Fast forward to the present.. I have a little more than 10 handguns and a few long ones...I shot at least 100-200 rounds at least twice a month and weekly if possible. Untill lately, I have been very recoil sensitive and often anticipating recoils eveytime I squeeze the trigger. Thanks, to the 9mm..I overcame that..The low cost of 9mm ammos allowed me to shot to heart's and pocket book's content.. I carry a G26 untill I started shooting my G23 and P229 and discovered I like the way the 40 S&W handles..Actually, I love it so much that I ended up with a P239 TT!! I have to admit I shoot better w/ this gun than my G26...Last week I ended up being the owner of a colt combat 1991A1 45acp..Now, this is my 3rd 1911 model 45 acp. The first two are Kimber and Para LTC. I love to shot them and they are very accurate but ammo cost and size of the gun , for CCW not for me. Well, yesterday I shot 50 rounds on the little colt combat and LO and Behold..Yes I love it and what recoil ?? That pleseant gun movement as it disperses the energy from the ammo explosion??? I love it!!The Colt Combat will be my 3rd carry as soon as I get it back from the gunsmith..He asked me to run at least 50 rounds on it and take it back to him for one final look over check up before I carry it. I also have ordered two Tripp Cobra mags for it..
So there's a personal account of a rookie's experience with the 1911 platform 45 acp..

Good Luck on your search....
