The last two paragraphs grabbed my attention becaue they seem contradictory what I understand of laws regarding felons and firearms. Since when can a felon possess a firearm in his residence?

He had a felony conviction in 1996 for grand larceny, a felony conviction in 1998 for possession of a stolen vehicle, and another in 2000 for rape, all in the same county in New York, according to police records.
Unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and tampering with evidence are third-degree felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years behind bars and a fine up to $10,000.
