Re: Groceries for guns
And if the donations paid the police officers salaries, or did they have to volunteer their time to suck up to their Kalifornia-learned boss?

Re: Groceries for guns
Thanks for the report, that's what I expected - junk guns. I REALLY want someone to take a photo of themselves using their VISA gift card to buy a new gun and send it to Acevedo .... can't believe how dense these people are to think that this will reduce crime in any way.

Re: Groceries for guns
You planning to stay the night? I'm tied up all afternoon Saturday watching the kids (my schoolteacher wife has to supervise graduation ceremony this year). But I'd be up for some shooting on Sunday. Maybe we gather "the usual suspects" around the Austin area and all meet up somewhere?surprise_i'm_armed wrote:Killing 2 birds with one stone, I am making the 220 mile
drive down to Austin to turn in a trouble prone .22 Harrington
and Richardson .22 Plainsman rifle.
I'll get $100 for a gun that holds onto most every shell w/o
ejecting it and that will pay for my gas round trip and noshing
with my son (the AK-47 disarming son for those of you that
were reading his saga last June 2009 on the forum).

Makes me wish I had an old beater to trade in.
Price the cops give you for a nonfunctional firearm - $100
Using that $100 toward the purcahse of a new gun and then sending the cops a thank you note and photo?
PRICELESS
There's some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's a free VISA debit card from your local PD

I agree with you. Wish I could go. But other plans supersede.jecsd1 wrote:Guys/Gals,
I know it's been largely a comical attitude regarding this program but I'm not sure how I feel about all this. Part of me wants to drive the 30 miles down there and sit across the street in the bed of my pickup truck with a sign that says "I beat any competitors offer on guns" but the other half of me wants the sign to say "TEXAS! Keep your guns! They want you to disarm!" Does anyone feel similar or am I over thinking this? What kind of message does this send to the public? "Guns are bad. Trust the Police to defend you. You don't need guns." Or is this actually a good thing? Opinions please.
ps. I'm in if anyone wants to do something worthwhile about this.

Re: Groceries for guns
And what would be the charge? Not disagreeing with you, just wondering what trumped up "charges" have been used in the past.LarryH wrote:IIRC, some of the threads regarding other "gun buyback" programs have stated that officials have taken a very dim view of anyone hanging out in the vicinity with the intention of conducting a private purchase of those guns. At the very least, those individuals would be told to "move along", with the possibility of steel bracelets for those who refuse.

Re: Groceries for guns
You may be on to something there about them slapping some "unconcealed handgun" charge on you. The poster specifically says to leave the gun and ammo in two separate paper bags and not to remove them. Of course, long guns are legal to carry unconcealed, but we all know APD's feelings on that - they'll likely try to arrest you on some disturbing the peace charge.O6nop wrote:As far as offering to buy them, I'm sure APD has that worked out, but face-to-face sales are legal, but unless you have a CHL, is it legal to walk around with them after you buy them? Open carry is illegal and concealed carry requires a license. If you try to purchase them on the premises I imagine that could be made to be illegal.
Here is another link for this event,it must be their poster.

Someone who just stole one.
That's what these things always turn into, some lowlife looks at all the guns he's stolen lately, figures out which ones won't fetch $100 at the pawn shop and trades those in for food stamps, which he sells at a mark up (or gives to his baby mama to settle last month's child support).
Gun buy backs are nothing more than a low-level fencing operation.

Re: Groceries for guns
OK, I'm completely serious about this ... could a group of us literally stand on the next corner and offer "free gun value appraisals" and offer to pay cash for these guns? Didn't someone try this in Dallas or one of the other cities that had a buyback program?
This infuriates me that they're going to give someone $100 for a nice stainless S&W revolver like the one in the video . The APD cops will probably pick over the good stuff, take it home, then burn the junk guns.
What's even more upsetting is the APD spokesman on camera making the asinine comment that every gun they collect makes us all safer.
Seriously, anyone know if their are laws or local ordinances against offering to appraise and/or buy a gun on a street corner like this? I need to do some research. Anyone have plans June 5? Want to hang out on a street corner on the east side?

Re: Groceries for guns
Unbelievable. Why didn't Dallas take this idiotic police chief? Dallas PD/council loves gun buy back programs. He'd fit right in!!!!
And they're most likely ripping these people off. $200 for an "assault rifle" ... heck, even a busted up SKS is worth more than that in today's inflated market. I seriously think some of us should go stand on the next corner and offer to pay more for these guns, and pay in cash - not glorified food stamps. Did you see that stainless revolver in the video? I'd give $200 cash for that right now even if it's just a Rossi, (instead of $100 in food stamps).
APD will probably turn around and sell these guns to an FFL who will sell them for three times what they owners got in food stamps.
This makes me so glad I live in Cedar Park.
