I'm by no means an expert on any of this, but I believe the chambering used by Bushmaster (and others) is a "Wylde chamber" that was specifically designed to accept both 5.56 and .223 cartridges. I think - but don't know for sure - there are some rifles out there that will accept ONLY 5.56 and not .223 and vice versa.
