That looks like a Model 1893 or 1895 Mauser, most probably chambered in 7x57 Mauser. It does look sporterized, but the rear sight leaf indicates it still has the original barrel. The 1893 and 1895 are, if I remember correctly, most easily differentiated by a half-moon cutout on the left side of the receiver to make loading easier; the 1895 has this, but the 1893 does not. Without seeing the markings, I can't tell where it's from; it could be Spanish, South American, or German.

It could also be chambered in .308/7.62x51. The Israelis got hold of and re-did a bunch of these into .308, a few decades ago, and a lot of them have found their way into the American market. Some people are leery of shooting these, as they were not designed for the .308; however, I own one and have not seen any problems with it.
