John Burleson, the county's first resident, was awarded 1,280 acres of land including the present Lampasas townsite on April 26, 1838, in return for his services during the Texas Revolution.

A "quarter section" = 160 acres.
A "section" = 640 acres.

640 acres = 1 square mile.

So, when this gentleman was awarded 1280 acres of land, his grant was exactly 2 square miles.

Oh, to think, what would it be like to live in a time where the government granted one huge amounts of land? Nowadays to buy a residential lot of .25 to .33 acres in a metro area will cost you dearly.
