I'd like to posit another possibility.

The firearms may have been in full view. The OP had been drinking, so maybe the roommate was also drinking.

The LEO's may have checked the roommate's ID and felt that she was not an eligible person. So they removed the guns.

I'd like to think that HPD was very busy that night and simply overlooked the documentation side of things.
Unfortunately the OP now has to do some work to remedy the situation and become whole again (re: get her guns back).
