This is one of the reasons I disagree with the NRA on the School Shield program. The use of police to handle minor disciplinary and/or administrative issues is becoming far too common in our schools. If the kid is being violent and a threat to others beyond what the staff can reasonably handle, then having the police involved is perfectly acceptable. But calling in the SRO just because a kid is talking in class, wearing a vulgar t-shirt, or drawing on his desk is out of line. Kids like this are too young and too easily intimiated to know and assert their Constitutional rights. Moreover, it creates the sense of the school being a police state, and it conditions the kids to be more compliant and unquestioning (i.e. not asserting their rights) once they reach adulthood. Don't get me wrong, I don't oppose having police available for schools that want and need them. I just think they should stay out of sight until there's a violent situation or a clear criminal act.
