I really like how you phrased this. :tiphat:

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR

Yep, the one that looks like an AK but internally isn't anything like it. Supposed to be a nice rifle though.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR

I think you meant to quote the guy next down from who you quoted.

One of the big complaints about AKs compared to ARs is the large, clumsy to operate safety.

Thing is, AKs are not meant to be run safety on. To quote Gabe Suarez on the subject,
Use Of Safety/Selector Lever. With the AR the safety/selector is right there, thus an operator can flip it on or off as he pleases. The AK's lever is not so handy. But it was not designed to be used that way. The AK can be carried On Safe, and the disengagement of it must be a part of its reactive deployment. That is NOT a big deal. However, the weapon need not be "safed" until the fight or engagement is over. US mitary doctrine doesn't go along with this, but who is to say that US Military doctrine is the only way?
Off the top of my head, thats one of the ways people try to run an AK like an AR and think it deficient. If you can learn to keep the safety off once you're ready to use it and keep the finger off the trigger, no problems. If you think you're going to move around with it on safe and easily put the weapon on fire, good luck.

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR

So far the AK only guys lag only slightly behind the AR only or Both groups. This has been informative. Good to know there are other Texans who've adopted the "commie gun". :cheers2:

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR

Since I live in town, my "home defense" is my pistol. If I lived in the country my home defense go to would be my AK. Honestly, in my current home situation if I had an AR it wouldn't be my home defense weapon either.

I don't really see myself assaulting a barricaded position anytime soon, (or being assaulted) so not too worried about standoffs.

On an off topic note, good to see you back active on the forums gigag. I've missed your sense of humor. :thumbs2:

Not only NO, but HECK NO. Show me one thing that an AR could do better than my AK as a civilian defense rifle. :biggrinjester:
Look cooler...

Not shoot through 20 people...

Not weigh as much...

Better supply of defense ammo (gold dots, TAP, etc)

I love the AK, and I have access to one, but the AR takes the win for patrol rifle, defense in my mind. If I was in the sandbox it MAY be a different story.
Look cooler: Can't hoist that AR over your head and shout WOLVERINES!! "rlol"

Not shoot through 20 people: If theres a group of people I'm shooting at, maybe I'll WANT it to penetrate 20 people. (ie mob situations)

Not weigh as much: If the AK weights too much for you, man up and bulk up! :thumbs2:

Better supply of defense ammo: got me there....but all I can say is stock up! Because after Katrina, we've learned anyone who thinks they're going to get resupplied through the local PD or the national guard is dreaming.

I understand there are definite advantages to both systems. I think being a lefty honestly prejudices me towards the AK as well. Easier to operate as an ambidextrous system than an AR is (unless you have a stag arms lefty rifle).

I'm honestly ok with either system, just curious what people use. :txflag:

Re: Who owns what? AK vs AR

So far, I'm the only "AK variants only" vote. Thats interesting.

Who owns what? AK vs AR

I just bought a Hungarian AMD-65 today, and got to thinking: This is my 2nd AK. Because of familiarity and ammo, I think I'll stick to AKs. At this point in my life, I'm not sure I'll EVER own an AR variant.

So I was just curious what the rest of you were like. Questions to answer:

Do you own one type or both? Just AKs

Whats your favorite rifle to shoot out of those you own? I already took the AMD-65 to the range and LOVED how it shot.

Which one is your "go to" rifle if you need one in a bad situation? At this point, the AMD-65 again.
