Re: So on the radio today...

I think it is callous of the State to actually call it the Welcome to Texas Tax.
Rather flippant.
Maybe they think it's funny.
If that's the case, they didn't succeed.

Re: So on the radio today...

I found this after a cursory search from the Bell County website, but of course it would apply statewide.

Here's a link:

http://www.bellcountytx.com/taxassessor/btxnwtxresd.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And a quote:

"If you are a new resident in Texas you may qualify for the New Resident tax on your vehicle(s). Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax on 80% of the Standard Presumptive Value on used vehicles (non dealer sales) titled and registered in Texas. If your vehicle was registered in another state in your name before you came to Texas, your New Resident tax is a flat $90.00 on these vehicles in addition to the registration and title fees. This applies to vehicles you own as well as to vehicles you lease."

Grog wrote: When I moved here last year, I got hit with the "Welcome to Texas!" New Resident Tax of $90. Not a good way to attract people to move here when you nickel and dime them to death.

Once you're here they gotcha!

They know you won't back over 90 bucks. After all, you left your other state for a reason right?

Most likely no work.

A lot of states slap this kind of a tax on new residents. Some are several hundred dollars.

Hey, no income tax. That helps a little doesn't it?
