Carry a BUG in a centerline (hung around your neck) if you can. I do this when traveling or having to sit in church or such. I carry a P3AT and it isn't heavy enough to even notice most of the time. It isn't quick draw but quick enough in a situation like you described. And better than leaving a handgun in a vehicle.
