AndyC, normally I agree with you. In this case we did some very light work on the retaining portions, and did all the engagement surface work by hand.
ETA--The primary hangups were on the "groove" at the retaining edge. Sorry I don't have any pics, but having done a bit of 1911 work (or so it sounds), I'm sure you know the area I'm talking about.
Dealing with the ideal situation (oversize replacement parts), does lead to a good deal of work when the frame cutouts are minimalist.
And we did have to turn down the pin a bit (.004 or so) to eliminate binding on the frame and grip safety.
Yes, we did all the standard safety checks. Including one nobody mentions...I've seen a 1911's thumb safety so out of whack that pulling the cocked hammer back against the beaver-tail will actually disengage it! Never figured out exactly what geometry caused that one--just replaced it!!
