So when will this legislation be voted on?
I'm a student at a commuter school in texas. I don't really fear some whacked out nutjob coming to campus to murder everyone in sight. Buuuut, after reading the constant (weekly) police updates on robberies, armed robberies, and sexual assaults that occur in and around campus (many of the robberies and aggravated robberies occur in the lot I park in, around the same time at night when I walk to my car --sans my sidearm) I don't feel safe.
It seems that the gun-fearing types think that legislation such as this is going to cause people to hand out guns on campus to everyone. It simply extends the right of those already qualified to carry a concealed handgun on to campus grounds. There won't be "more" guns available to people, and those without CHLs won't be allowed to suddenly bring aks to class with them (although if it were legally permissible, I would bring mine, lol).
By having "gun free" zones covering campuses, we're simply telling criminals (who can and do read surprisingly) that we're completely exposed to them should they decide to bring a gun in their criminal endeavors on campus. And I've seen the reports of it from my school.
All this denial of our rights really makes me feel like America is not what our forefathers envisioned for us; their descendants.
America is like the latest baby in a nuclear family. He has a big brother--the government, and his parents have aged and no longer have the capacity to secure the world for their youngest son. The parents were hard working people who went into the wilderness with their axe and their gun. Over time they tamed the wild and built those cities of gold that the ancients used to speak of. Their wilderness abode was harsh and life was difficult at best mostly, but they persevered. But now, in their waning years, they've left big brother to look after the young one. Big brother had good intentions toward his younger. He put safety devices on all the electrical plugs, he took out all the furniture with sharp edges, he bricked up the fireplace so the youngling wouldn't ever get burned. He padded the walls, put in a security system, installed a vchip in the tv, and even stockpiled food for the young one. Big brother was so good at making sure that everything was safe he decided to make a living of doing that all the time, everywhere and for everyone. Now big brother put the parents in a retirement home, and left to protect the world. Only, he forgot to legislate a door lock for the front door. And the young one is at home, alone, and "safe". But the wolf can smell him. The wolf is the remainder of the scourge that the elders tried to vanquish in their time, before Big brother started taking care of everything for them. And now the wolf (the criminals if you haven't already guessed) has come in, and the youngling (law abiding american public) is in the center of the room (yeah, that same room that big brother sealed up the fireplace, took out all the furniture, padded the walls, etc) and the only thing standing between them is the air itself. Now the youngling realizes why the Father's gun used to have it's shining spot on top of that once roaring fireplace. But father is gone, mother is gone, big brother has left to do "better things" for the world. And here is the big bad wolf starring over his exposed fangs. And you know what the wolf is thinking? "Well I'll be voting for big brother again this year, right after I finish off this nice meal he's prepared for me!"
