Re: Shootin Turtles?
The Jefferson parish sheriffs office used to use nutria as moving target practice. They would close off roads next to subdivisions at night and spotlight nutria in the canals and pop em. It was not uncommon for them to kill a hundred or so a night. The nutria would dig holes in the sides of the canals causing significant damage. We loved going out to watch but PITA got wind of it and that was the end of that.03Lightningrocks wrote:Very True... I have seen land that was destroyed by feral hogs. We may be losing the war against them. They are bad for darned near every native species they encounter. Funny you mentioned the nutria. I don't know much about them but we were talking at work the other day and a co-worker from Louisiana gave the exploding nutria populations partial credit for the over population of gators "back Home" as he put it. He is from some swamp in Louisiana. He did not think highly of nutria for many reasons.Mike1951 wrote:Feral hogs and nutria should be killed at every opportunity without any remorse.03Lightningrocks wrote:Feral hogs are actually an invasive species that don't belong. That is a very different issue than blasting turtles to save the frogs.

Re: Shootin Turtles?
Everyone I've known with ponds hated turtles. Most compared them to rats. Knew one guy that kept a .22 rifle in his truck and would stop by each of his ponds on the way home from work each day to see how many he could pop.
He did this for a long time until one day he noticed a couple gators in the big pond. It was not long before the turtle population was under control. The gators got big though. He ended up having to shoot the largest one, but he was able to wrestle the other one into the back of his truck and relocate it. He said the wrestling part looked much easier on tv.
