However, as others have pointed out, if it was an after school activity for an other organization (let's say Boy Scouts for example), then carrying would still be legal for CHL'ers. I apologize if I jumped to a wrong conclusion about the after school event in my earlier post.

As long as you are not in a building and there is no school function going on, you're okay. From your descriptions, you've been doing things exactly right. Private (non-school) groups having sports practices do not bar CHL'ers; other kids and parents anjoying the (outdoor) facilities of the school do not bar CHL'ers; an after school event that was for the school does bar CHL'ers.
