I was under the impression that this was a scholl sponsored activity, which would make carrying illegal. However, as others have pointed out, if it was an after school activity for an other organization (let's say Boy Scouts for example), then carrying would still be legal for CHL'ers. As long as you are not in a building and there is no school function going on, you're okay. From your descriptions, you've been doing things exactly right. Private (non-school) groups having sports practices do not bar CHL'ers; other kids and parents anjoying the (outdoor) facilities of the school do not bar CHL'ers; an after school event that was for the school does bar CHL'ers.
