John George had some nice things to say about the carbine in Shots Fired in Anger. He was a pretty serious rifle shooter before the war, and became a sniper in the Pacific campaign. A veteran of Guadalcanal and of Merrill's Marauders operations in Burma, he's entitled to his opinions on combat weapons.

One of his few complaints about the .30 Carbine ammunition was that it wouldn't shoot through the tropical trees as well as the '06, when engaging a Japanese soldier that he knew was hiding behind them. I also thought it was interesting that he really wanted a 5-round magazine to make it even easier to carry.
