All in all a good post.
My main competition gun is a fully custom Para P16-40. It was built specifically for IPSC is the early 90s and I shoot it still today as my sidearm in 3 gun competitions. However for shooting pleasure and/or SD performance, I still prefer a 1911 in either 9mm or .45 ACP.

I have never owned a glock in .40 and to my knowledge have never shot one. Being an avid reloader, I hate the unsupported chamber in the Glocks and the resulting buldges in spent brass.

Your comments regarding recoil. are spot on...I would just consider 40 vs 45 as "different"....not really that one recoils more or less than the other round. I have always found .40s to be snappy and tend to come straight back while the .45 has more muzzle flip. My 9 mm 1911s are really sweet shooters. The commander and the 5" guns do not recoil much more than a .22.
