That's how I read it, white or amber (non flashing). It specifically mentions LEDs, what if you have neons? Surprised they made it so narrow.
Hmmmm.... maybe a lawyer will step in here to help clarify. It specifically mentions LED's, and white or amber, non flashing, as being
allowed. However, many laws specifically forbid certain items or actions. And, I guess that's the basis of my question. This one does not
specifically forbid other colors. I can see interpreting this Bill either way. As in now allowing white/amber, LED's as down lighting. Or,
as in now allowing white/amber down lighting in addition to other colors......as if white/amber had been illegal previously.

Personally I try to not ride at night. However, if I have to, and I'm on a highway or Interstate, I will turn on my down lighting. It's
blue. It only lights the engine and the ground immediately beneath. But it does increase side visibility and visibility from those approaching from the rear.
It can not be seen in the rear view mirror of the traffic in front of the bike. That is the only time I use the down lighting. I'd hate to have
to pull all the hidden LED's and rewire just to make a color change.

Edit to ask an off topic question: Any Austinites able to report if ROT went off problem free or was there trouble in capital city? Thanks.

Re: Motorcycle Lighting Question for LEO

wondering if someone got ticketed for using white or amber specifically. Since the
Bill / Analysis doesn't forbid other colors (purple, green etc). It just says white/amber is ok.
and the purpose: Safety.

I have decided remaining with the factory lights and not adding anything additional keeps me under the radar. I ride a Honda vfr I already get grouped into the sport bike category by anyone who knows nothing about motorcycles which is quite a large percentage of the population.
I've seen some touring bikes/baggers that really were lit up like a Christmas tree. Not particularly my taste in lighting.
However, a few hidden LED strands lighting the ground/engine area is quite different.
I thought a Honda VFR was a sportbike. Did you make it a bagger? Add a touring bike suspension or seat?
My interaction with PoPo (three times in the last 40 years) has always been positive. Keep your front wheel on the

trdvet wrote:State law allows LE in Texas to enforce the federal lighting code. This is what they use for non-approved equipment.
547.3215 FEDERAL STANDARD

Unless specifically prohibited by this chapter, lighting, reflective devices, and associated equipment on a vehicle or motor vehicle must comply with:

(1) the current federal standards in 49 C.F.R. Section 571.108; or

(2) the federal standards in that section in effect,
if any, at the time the vehicle or motor vehicle was manufactured.
Per DPS:
Vehicle lighting equipment is covered in Chapter 547 of the Texas Transportation Code, Subchapter D. § 547.3215 - Use of Federal Standard. Unless specifically prohibited by this chapter, lighting, reflective devices, and associated equipment on a vehicle or motor vehicle must comply with:
• the current federal standards in 49 C.F.R. Section 571.108; or
• the federal standards in that section in effect, if any, at the time the vehicle or motor vehicle was manufactured.
The CFR will refer you to Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) #J578, which will refer to several other SAE standards. Everything that complies with those standards is "legal".
I was unable to find anything “illegal” about down lighting being added to a M/C.
Did I miss a specific rule or prohibition of M/C down lights? I found the Federal rules
mainly concerned with light output, size, location, color, type for original equipment and
longitudinal axis/horizontal plane projection requirements.

If anyone has any advice...I'm all ears..
Since your post is so brief, with no real details, ....... try reading the first sections of Tx Transportation Code...
Section 547.305. http://law.onecle.com/texas/transportat ... 05.00.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If your lights aren't pointed straight ahead or visible more than 75' etc...... no flashing red, blue etc......
pointed down at the ground and NOT flashing ....you should be good to go....with exceptions.

Where was the ticket written. Keep us posted on outcome. Good luck.

Re: Motorcycle Lighting Question for LEO

You'll have to ask me in another 5-7,000 miles. A few thousand on them now.
But, so far they seem to not be showing any unusual wear. Like the ride and
I don't plan on ever returning to HD/Dunlops.

I am late to jump in on the thread, but as a rider myself, the more lighting you have, the better. Some cops may not appreciate your blue or purple undergo, and to be honest, I don't know a single rider that has them for safety purposes, they're to show off. I don't ride at night for safety purposes, but like I do on my truck, I light it up like a Christmas tree with side markers and additional brake/turn signals. Might it seem like overkill when I tap my brakes and you can count over half a dozen brakes lights, sure, but you're appreciate it in low visibility situations!

Something that's not so common, but that I highly suggest, are amber running lights along the side of your bike if feasible. If you have a luggage rack like most KLR's or such, it's not a bad idea to mount additional brake/turn signals off of it, or you hard mounted saddlebags if possible. I think a pulsing center light, with two steady lights on either side is far more visible than other applications. It's all about being safe out there, but if you can, why not go buy a cheap old Chevrolet tank for night driving if possible. I'll be riding once I get the Kawasaki rebuilt, I still regret selling my honda dual purpose... :cryin Anybody got a KLR they'll let me make payments on with full coverage?

Too bad we've never met. If we had, you'd be able to say," I know one rider that uses down lights for safety purposes, and not to show off".

Re: Motorcycle Lighting Question for LEO

Thread resurection, love it! I use the down lights if riding at night. I have not been stopped or checked
by any Leo in the last 3 years of use. (I installed them 3 years ago). They project a soft blue light down.
Not forward. Not rearward. It looks like I'm riding on a "blue cloud". These were installed as a safety
feature for me when riding. Background on the decision to install them:
about 4 years ago my wife and I were traveling to OKC for a funeral. It was night, raining and foggy. On the other
side (south bound) of the highway came a soft green glow.......I then realized it was a biker. The "glow" in
the rain/fog/mist made that guy's visibility factor increase by 500%. That's what impressed me enough to
do the install on my own bike. Not for the cool factor, for the safety factor. I try not to ride at night. But,
sometimes it's unavoidable. Ride safe.

Re: Motorcycle Lighting Question for LEO

I finally got to speak with a veteran DPD motorcop at a school fund raiser last night. He said the LED lighting
that lights the engine, frame etc is NOT against the law. But, you want to stay away from a red & blue
combination or anything that could be seen easily from the front of the bike (as in the rear view mirror of a
vehicle in front of you) imitating a police or emergency vehicle. His only other comment was that he has
quit riding his personal bike at night.

Mine are UV LED and i seriously doubt that my combined total output comes close to 100 candlepower. :tiphat:

the Ultra Violet LED emits a purple glow that is very eerie and ghostly on chrome..

Only time an officer said anything about mine was that it was cool and he couldn't focus on the bike because of the lighting.. :thumbs2:

I also have a Knight Rider LED (12) brake light that is mounted above my LP.. this is not a flashing light, but it's a 'chasing' or sequential light that moves like the light bar on the car "KIT" .. when you hit the brakes, this flashes several times before going solid. Really gets the attention of the cager behind you..
http://www.customdynamics.com/knight_ri ... ht_bar.htm
That's my understanding, the purple LED's are about a 1/3 as bright as the white, red, blue.
If you have a night time picture post it. Sounds like a nice job on the lighting.

[quote = "sugar land dave"] As another thought, I cannot imagine any experienced LEO wanting to write tickets which would lead to more time spent overseeing fatality accident scenes. Turning a blind eye (pun intended) might be the truly right move in such situations.

I can't imagine it either, but it happens. In LEO work, as in other occupations, experience, wise discretion and knowledge = superior officer/employee.

However, from a cage's viewpoint, well, at least mine, whenever I have been been out at night and seen a bike with these lights it is a little distracting. They are not bright or blinding and don't bother my eyes, but they do draw my eyes away from everything else.
Then they served their purpose. You weren't bothered or blinded but you did notice the bike. I'm sure you didn't continue staring, but glanced, and then resumed
driving in a safe manner, checking rear view mirrors every few seconds, staying in your lane, not impeding traffic flow and obeying all traffic laws to the best of your ability like every red blooded American and Texas resident. :txflag:

Where were you, and did the officer tell you they were illegal, or he just didn't like your bike (J/K)? Like, maybe he is

So much for your stereotype :reddevil

It seems like some of these laws or non-laws could be used to curtail the activities of and/or provide probable cause to stop members of certain undesirable groups.
Although I don't know RPBrown personally, I don't have reason to believe that he is a member of any undersirable groups. I guess they could
also be used to provide probable cause to hassle anyone that has long hair, walks with a limp, isn't the correct skin color, is overweight,
is lawfully carrying under MPA or CHL, has a NRA patch on their vest, etc etc etc. maybe the AMA needs to take this up with gov'ment.
No, they haven't really done anything to help the sport in years.
