This debate is stupid! Over and out!
You got what you wanted. Metal detectors, xray machines, extra staffing etc etc etc
Be happy .

06nop: Great link, thanks. At least some in Austin are able to use common sense.

Re: Procedure at the state capitol

texas1234 wrote:I just talked to a few staff members at the Capitol who are pro-gun and pro-chl. They do not want to see access denied to CHL holders, but like me they completely agree something needed to be done about the security up there, it has been dismal for a very long time, and it wasnt just one incident it has been numerous incidents where security has failed in even the most basic forms, and it is not fair to the staff for them to work in a high profile atmosphere like a State Capitol and not have more protection and be completely open to any crazy person who wants to walk in their office and do damage. I understand everyones view on not wanting the State to start imposing locks and chains on everything, but the reality is we dont live in that world and something needed to be done up there to enhance security and help protect the visitors, staff, and legislators. I do understand the metal detectors are not fool proof but they definately help. The Marine in me says its about time and thank goodness they are at least trying to do something before somebody gets hurt. On a purely ideological level no I dont want metal detectors but the common sense part of me says you dont have a choice.
I see now. They are a "special" little segment of our society and need "special" treatment. Great. The several incidents line of thinking..... gee, maybe the unspecial guys that work in 7-11's, Circle K's, Quick Marts etc that see a whole lot more "special" incidents than anyone at the state capital need metal detectors and xray machines too. Yea, I get it now. The staffers are pro-gun/pro-chl but only if it excludes / includes them at their whim. Kinda like being a 1st Ammendment supporter but not a 2nd or 10th, or, I support some but not all ammendments..... either put both feet in the tub or get out.

I plan to call Senator Shapiro's office, as well as the new state rep primary winner Van Taylor and tell them I am not happy with the move. I don't think calling Brian McCall's office will do any good at present since he is a lame duck. We already know that Gov. Perry was against it, but he will hear from me also.

Thanks for the kick in the pants. I'll be calling or emailing Austin tomorrow. I agree, why just vent here, do something about it.
At least let your opinion be known.

Re: Procedure at the state capitol

Separate entrances for groups, separate entrances for CHL'ers, separate entrances for individuals and or families, separate entrances for our scared senseless representatives and their employees, metal detectors, x-ray machines, additional staff to man and enforce the new machines and all the needless rules that will be in place. Total hysteria. Over reaction would be an understatement.

DPS? They suggested this? Weren't they the ones in charge of protecting the Governors mansion? Oh, I forgot..... that got torched on their watch.....

Folks this is 10 steps backward. I'm ashamed of the law makers that endorsed this idea. Cowardice and chicken poop. I don't care which party they are associated. This will eventually set precedence for the rest of the state. Not good, not good, not good.

The thought of metal detectors and xray machines at my state capital makes me ill.
That link doesn't quite work. I understand that Perry was the only one to vote against it. I wonder if (assuming there are CHL holders in the state rep and senators) they will continue to carry anyways. Reminds me of when they voted to require two license plates on every vehicle, and then John Kelso video taped half the officials vehicles leaving the capitol grounds, lacking a front plate. Darned hypocrites!
hmmm... the link works for me. Anybody else having a problem with the posted link?

texas1234 wrote:Just for the record I am not so concerned for the politicians as I am for 100's of school kids that walk those halls everyday. The "people" are there a lot more than the politicians. The politicians should feel perfectly safe because they are rarely there.
I would agree that this is another reason to let teachers and CHL's carry in schools and at school functions.

Yes detectors would have mattered in this case. She is lucky she wasnt in her office.
Ok. So 1 incident, in which a stalker pops off a round outside; and the state capital should be locked down with metal detectors,
scanning wands, 2-4 DPS troopers at each entrance, trays provided for xray of personal items in pockets, shoes removed and xrayed, every visitor viewed as a BG until proven innocent, unarmed and submissive? No.
How about requiring all capital employees to have basic defense/firearm training and give them the option to be armed while on the capital grounds? Sounds like a plan. :txflag:

texas1234 wrote:They dont have them yet and they did not have them last session either. It is also foolish and irresponsible in my opinion not to have them. I am there 10 times a year at a minimum and during session and it has always blown my mind, as a matter of fact the first thing anybody new I take there with me for a meeting that has never been always says. "You mean you can just walk right in"
And my opinion is I think it is foolish to have them. The single incident earlier was a upset boyfriend of some capital worker.
Not a voter upset with a state legislator. On this I agree with Perry 100%.... we don't need the capital looking like an airport.
Your response to your pals that say "You mean you can just walk right in"; should be Heck Yea Buddy! And thank God we live in Texas!
