I recall an interview I heard with a guy about his book. He researched police and self defense shootings with different calibers at the results. I think the main thing he concluded was there little statistical difference in effectiveness between 9mm, 40, and 45. The drop off happened when calibers dropped below 9mm.
That said, my G21 with 13 round mags have plenty of capacity IMO. Where I worry about capacity is with my XDs with only the 6 rounds.

I am happy with either 45 or 9mm. I have moved away from 40 simply because if I want bigger bullets, I will go 45. If I want capacity, I will go with 9mm. I don't want to compromise inbetween. I have a G21 and an XDm 9mm and either will get the job done.
