I guess it depends on what and where. Mine was about that price also (Champion I believe). Regarding fire ratings, you are going to have to determine what you are worried about most. Theft or Fire or both? IMO, you should figure what minimum theft deterrence you want/need and then look at those models are better for fire ratings.

That is what motivated me to buy a safe finally. I got to where I had several pistols and rifles that cost 2 or 3 times what a half way decent safe would cost so I decided to get one.
