I think the OP has a good starting point at 500 or so rounds plus replacement.

What you should do after that is stockpile a little bit of cash or money set aside for ammo only. Keep your eyes open for a deal on a case or other size bulk order and take advantage of it when you can. I never thought I had that much ammo, but I look at what I have and I realize I still have ammo that I got a great deal on based on today's prices. At the time, I was not sure it was such a great price.

Also, take a chunk of your stockpile and store it somewhere other than where you keep your ammo. Or at least box/can it up so you don't dig into it all the time. I have ammo stuffed in ammo cans that I rarely use simply because I don't dig through my ammo cans much.
