While I agree it was a joke, and shouldn't be taken as seriously as some take it, it DOES outline a problem.
Carrying guns in school is a nono unless you're one of the "Only Ones" (i.e. a cop, etc)

While most of us civillians cannot have a personal policeman to protect us 24/7, someone in high public office usually does.

In my eyes, it makes it much harder for a President to remember what it's like for the rest of us that don't have secret service protection for the rest of our lives after becoming president.

(PS McCain would make the same joke in the same circumstance, I guarantee it. His sense of humor is worse.)
