Re: How to convert your liberal friends (to win next election)
Gun rights isn't completely about guns. Personal ownership of guns is about second amendment issues much as it is social issues. The friction is generated when someone tries to make it all about one and nothing about the other. General acceptance will come from a balance between the two views, not from one side overcoming the other.

Drjoker: I've altered my signature to more accurately decribe myself. You are correct about wondering just how many are really hard left or hard right.

Re: How to convert your liberal friends (to win next election)
I've never heard this position stated this way before.mr.72 wrote: And by the way, what does "gay marriage" have to do with freedom? This is another law someone wants passed to give something to somebody. Gay people have the same right to a state-sanctioned marriage as straight people do. When you go get a marriage license they don't ask if you are gay. There are probably many thousands of gay people in TX who are legally married. Now IMHO, if the state did not sanction ANY marriage and then this becomes a complete non-issue. What the gays want is not to be able to get married. They want to force society to validate their lifestyle choice. This is about as anti-freedom as you can get.
IMHO.

Amen, brother.nitrogen wrote:
You'd be poor at converting liberals; as you obviously feel that you are better than people you disagree with. This type of attitude is probably the biggest thing that keeps gun owners seen as a fringe group, and the biggest thing that needs to go among us all.

Re: How to convert your liberal friends (to win next election)
It is easy if you stick to the issues. Does anyone ever ask how many potential voters that have been lost because they have substituted the issue of 2nd Amendment rights with attacks on personalities?Dragonfighter wrote:Okay your in. Now let's see, the 2nd Amendment to the constitution is...oh wait, you're already on board there. Hey! This is easier than I thought.Zee wrote:I'll be your friend.Dragonfighter wrote:What if I don't have any liberal friends?
How many potential voters can I afford to offend? Do my broad statements about certain groups all but guarantee those votes aren't changing? All voters are potential allies.
I had a saleperson from Yellow Pages actually mock me because I wondered if the ads were for me. At that point the issue was not the Yellow Pages but should I be dealing with someone who offends me on a personal level. No ad was sold.
Why emphasize the differences in thoughts and beliefs that are not related to the issue of RKBA? Focus instead on the common goals.

We should be sharing ideas and concepts to others so they can take a fair look and see what they think. Too often different postions try to make their case through a bumper sticker, a mocking picture, or a phrase. Its a little more complex than that.
Its nice to read real people's opinions here rather than feel I'm in an echo chamber sometimes.

Re: How to convert your liberal friends (to win next election)
Speaking as a flaming liberal, I believe others are more apt to consider alternative views when a respectful conversation occurs. Liberals, by definition, are open and tolerant. Liberals should be the easiest to talk to because they are apt to listen.
It is a struggle to be heard if the approach is rigid, stereotypical, and bordering on hateful. I cringe when the message is wrapped in a Conferate flag and a hearty "To heck with you, sissy." Playground-style attacks on the person, not on the position does nothing to help any cause.
The second amendment is not about duck hunting. I believe in gun responsible gun rights. Not everyone shows to be responsible and shouldn't have a gun until they become responsible.
I want to share my views with others, Dems, Reps, and Others but a lot of the time the discussion is not about the issue of gun rights but the personality of the person with the view. When I talk with others I try to filter out the garbage that is sometimes associated with the issue but is not really the issue. I get frustrated when I talk responsible gun rights but the listener thinks I'm saying 'Shoot-first Life-style."
There are gun-toting Liberals and Conservatives who don't care for them at all. The issue is gun rights, not particular party preference.
Anyway, consider my view when you try to be heard by someone who may be a little biased against your position. Maybe it will help the issue.
