Re: What to practice to improve score

Just to finish the story, today's shooting test saw me get a 246/250. Without y'all's advice, I'm sure it would have been much lower. Thanks for the help.

Excellent point!

My goal with this original message was just to gather some ideas on how to improve. I don't anticipate any trouble *passing* the shooting test, but I am aiming for as high a score as I can get. If I had kept up with my training and dryfire, there's no reason to not get a perfect score. The test isn't that hard. I'm just a bit nervous as I've not had nearly the range time I should have had in the last couple years. Yes, I had a lot of travel and such, but that's just excuses. This has been a good lesson for me. Despite the travel and work, I need to get my butt to the range and dryfire and get more training. I need to find a shooting buddy and keep my skills as polished as they can get because you are right. If, God forbid, I ever had to pull the trigger to save my life or the life of someone else, it needs to be drilled into muscle memory to where I can do it correctly and accurately under stress.

This thread has given me a lot of good advice, some old and some new, and I am really appreciative. My practice (dry and live) has improved because of the things people have said, and I really can't say enough thank you's for all the good advice.

You know, I wish I'd thought of that. In this case, I just used what the range provided. You're right though, using the actual CHL target would have been a good idea.

Re: What to practice to improve score

Visited the range today (Best of the West), and took advantage of their 10 yard pistol range. (They say it's 10 yards, but it seems more like 7 to me.)

Attached are pics from my first 5 shots, my first 10 shots, and the target at the end of all 100 rounds that I fired at it. Overall, I was pretty happy. I'm a bit left overall, but everything is on the paper. The paper is 10 inches wide (the grid lines are 1 inch apart), which I believe is narrower than the 5-pt zone on the CHL target. I thought I'd toss this out there in case anyone has feedback or advice to tighten things up in the next couple days.

Ok. Never type before you've had the required amount of coffee. I meant it stays put through the trigger manipulation up to the shot. Taking out the slack and the press.

Re: What to practice to improve score

Well in the last 2 weeks, I've done about 900 "rounds" of dryfire (with snapcaps) and 100 rounds live. So far, things seem to be improving. The dime and nickle stay put through the draw and usually on the actual strike. Class is a week from tomorrow, so I'll try to hit it as much as I can this week.

Bryan

I've been trying the dryfire with a quarter on the front sight. It stays nicely put through the draw until the "click" when the shot breaks. At that point it's an even guess if it'll stay on the site or not. I'm wondering if it's something I'm doing or if the striker hitting the snap-cap is enough vibration to knock the quarter off the g19 front sight.... Should the quarter survive the "click" every time?

I'm out of the loop here, please enlighten me.
A new law was passed on this years legislature and was signed by the governor. It gets rid of the need for a renewal class. The law does not become effective until September 1st.

See thread that covers the new law here. viewtopic.php?f=125&t=66361" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Wow. So, having started the current process on-line and been notified that I need to send them a course completion sheet to complete it, should I finish out this renewal the "old" way, or what can/should I do?

What to practice to improve score

Hey guys,

I am scheduled for my renewal course in about a month.

When I originally took the test, I passed easily, but I didn't get a perfect score. For the renewal, I decided to set that as my own personal goal. I'm not the world's greatest shot, and never will be, but I figure the 8-ring is big enough that I should be able to keep everything in there. Unfortunately, due to travel for work, I haven't had much range time in the last 6 months. Pitifully little, but where I was in the world there were no opportunities. So, I'm looking for some advice. With a month to train and a goal of 250/250, what would y'all suggest I work on? How would you prepare?

Thanks in Advance
