That's how Mrs. joe817 learned about the hobby, and I took her to "target practice" when we were dating in 1968. Little did she know that my pistols at the time were a Colt 1911, a Remington 1890 single action in .44-40(grandaddy to a .44 magnum), and a Colt 1873 SAA in .32-20. She shot them all, but didn't enjoy the the Remington or the 1911.
Yep I think introducing it that way works pretty well. Heck, I bought my fiance a Walther PPK/S for Christmas and she got that before she got her ring. Fortunately she didn't have to use it to get the ring.
I had originally gotten her a Kimber Crimson Carry Ultra, but she didn't like it so much. We took a tour of some local gunshops and walked out with one she picked out.
