My son just turned 21. All State football player in high school, 'Mr. Everything' , all kind of awards for football, and baseball. Went to college on a football scholarship, made the varsity as a freshman. Was seriously injured in the third game that year, doctors said no more football because of the metal implant they had to put in his shoulder.

Prior to football, he didn't have much of an interest in anything but sports. After he could no longer play, he turned to being a baseball umpire, now he is doing college games and plans to attend the pro-baseball umpire academy when he graduates from college in another year and a half. Since he is no longer a player and having to spend so much time at practices, he has developed interests in other things. Two years ago, he went hunting for the first time and enjoyed it. This year he got his first deer. His attention is now including handguns and he will be attending a CHL course as soon as he gets an open Saturday.

As he was growing up, I never 'forced' any of my hobbies or things I like upon him, He was free to make his own choices and my role was to support him as long as he used common sense and made wise choices. Now I find that he is wanting to be more and more like his 'old man' every day. There has even been talk recently about going to the DPS academy when he graduates from college, and he has even hinted about wanting a Harley. Yikes..... another me running around, now that's a scary thought, LOL !!!!

Quality Time

Lots of high paid shrink types are always spouting off about ways to spend quality time with your kids.

Bet they would never think about a gun range being a place for 'quality time', LOL !!! But it sure is ! :)

Went to Abilene Indoor Gun Range with my son this afternoon. It was first class quality time, we throughly enjoyed each other and the 500 rounds we exhausted.

It was fun watching him progress from a S&W model 640 centennial with 38+P rounds to a S&W 686+ with a 2.5 inch barrell and 357 magnum rounds. It was a blast watching the red laser dot from the Crimson Trace grips dance around, then instructing him to a firm steady dot and a greatly improved shot group.

We also went through 250 rounds on my Glock 23, 40 caliber. Had three rounds fail to load, all from the same single stack magazine at different times. None from either of the 3 other double stack magazines. Might need to get a new spring.

It was an ego booster watching him marvel at my shot groups, but I kept reminding him that I am 57 years old and I have been at it since I was 18.

Yep, it was a very good day all around !
