Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

Excaliber wrote:My Dan Wesson Valkyrie Commander arrived yesterday and I've put 300 rounds of ball and hollowpoint ammo through it with magazines from Dan Wesson, Tripp Research, and Wilson Combat with zero malfunctions.

The gun is extremely tightly fitted and the manual cautions not to use it for carry or competition until 300 - 500 rounds have been fired to allow the mating surfaces to seat against each other. During that time some slow slide movement and failures to go into battery can be expected. However, I didn't encounter any, which is quite a pleasantly different experience than I had with the Ruger 1911.

This gun is a winner and is now my primary EDC.

Good Deal!

Very happy for you. In the end...something good came of all that grief.

Yes.

I'm waiting for my Dan Wesson Valkyrie Commander to be shipped. It should come in a couple of weeks.

You dirty dog, you got me drooling now! :thumbs2:

Congratulations.

Excaliber wrote:Here's the final resolution:

After a short breakin period, the new gun now reliably feeds FMJ and hollowpoints from Ruger 7 round magazines, but still isn't 100% with the 8 round Tripp Cobra and Wilson Combat mags I prefer to carry.

Ruger has met its obligations on this one because the gun works with their OEM equipment , but I have decided this gun just doesn't meet my needs.

It's going to be sold or traded.

If anyone here is interested, shoot me a PM.
Dang!

How do the failures manifest? Doesn't go completely into battery? Jam in barrel/feed angle? Does it do it at any round count (magazine fully loaded, last round, etc)?

I just hate that this thing isn't working for you.

Randalls (what - you never heard of the first CNC machined stainless 1911)
Oh man....that is a pistol I wish I'd kept. I bought a Randall Service Model 'C' in the Summer of '83 from McBrides Gunshop in Austin, Texas. I was in the store looking at some reloading equipment when they put it in the display case. I fell in love with it immediately and purchased it on the spot.

Kept that excellent shooting (and utterly reliable) pistol for about 8 years before trading it straight up for a S&W 629.

I've had a lot of 1911's since then...but always regretted not keeping the Randall. Of course, now they are collectors items!

^^^^^^^^^^^ Agreed. More often than not...this is where you will find your problem .

To those with new pistols, for what its worth: 'Going to the range' is the LAST thing I do.

Any new firearm of mine is first thoroughly inspected, cleaned, lubed, cycled by hand and function tested (except firing) before it ever gets the first round put through it.

I pretty much 'expect' that magazines will need to deburred/polished/tuned. Extractor tension is easily checked on most pistols.

In the OP's case (Excaliber), he tried everything that was reasonable for the gun owner to try...without voiding the warranty (you guys did a good job). He has a good understanding of how his firearm is supposed to work and the functions of the related parts. He just happened to get one with several problems.

Re: Ruger 1911 Commander .45 Problem

^^^^^^^^ Hope this one works for you. You certainly tried everything reasonable to do yourself...with the last one. I know how disappointing that can be.

Let's hope this one= Happiness!
