Re: DPS Processing Times

NEW OR RENEWAL: New
NAME: pdubyoo
DATE A COMPLETE APPLICATION RECEIVED BY DPS: 9/4/08
DATE LICENSE WAS RECEIVED: Mailed 12/5/08
TOTAL NUMBER OF DAYS IN PROCESSING: 92
DID YOU RECEIVE A LETTER FROM DPS REGARDING A DELAY: Yes...Ike
DID YOU CAUSE ANY DELAY IN PROCESSING. IF YES, EXPLAIN: No
YOUR CHL NUMBER: [DON'T PROVIDE IN THE OPEN FORUM]
YOUR TEXAS DRIVERS LICENSE NUMBER: [DON'T PROVIDE IN THE OPEN FORUM]
IF DPS GAVE YOU A VERBAL EXPLANATION (EXCUSE) FOR ANY DELAY, PLEASE EXPLAIN: Harris County Background Check
WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION LATER: Yes

For those applicants delayed by "Ike", I recommend contacting your Rep and asking them to personally contact DPS in Harris County to help move your BC along. With only ONE Trooper processing BC's for Harris County, the backlog could take quite a long time to work off. The Rep's need to push DPS to allocate more staffing resources.

dwhitley wrote:Not sure why I walked into Harris County Court Records yesterday and was out in 15 minutes with my background info that I need to submit with my App... I would say Galveston, would be hard to research, but Harris County - Houston should have no problems right now.
That's what I was hoping to hear from someone in the "know". I would imagine that, with the resources of the 4th largest city in the U.S., there wouldn't be any disruption with clerical-type data flow in Harris County. Yes, I can see where Galveston County would be completely non-responsive right now and for the long-term forseable future.

I'm curious what DPS means by "field investigation results" in their delay letter. Is that a search of the Harris County Court records only, or what exactly? Is this something that I could go and retrieve myself and send it to the DPS-Austin?

Re: DPS Processing Times

Well...for those residents of the Gulf Coast counties that were effected by Hurricane Ike, we just learned that Ike isn't finished with us yet.

DPS sent a letter on 9/29 by e-mail, stating that all county background checks from hurricane-effected Gulf Coast counties are expected to be delayed...excerpt follows. I started my application and paid my fee online before the state sent my packet. Is is true that by doing this, the "field investigations" are initiated prior to receipt of the completed & returned packet?

Excerpt:
Dear Sir/Madam:
This letter is to inform you of an unforeseen delay with the processing of your concealed handgun application. Due to the catastrophic events and aftermath of Hurricane Ike, obtaining the required field investigation results for the counties located in the Gulf Coast area will be delayed for an unknown period of time while disaster recovery efforts are underway. The Department remains hopeful that these delays will be minimal; however, a specific timeframe for processing is not available at this time. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate your understanding in this matter.
