It seems unlikely that Houston PD would be working the show. Are you sure it wasn't Harris Co. SO or another agency?

Houston Police Officers Union president Ray Hunt said the officers were prevented from carrying out these duties because they violate department policies regarding off-duty jobs. The gun show’s rules are that people can’t bring a concealed handgun into the show, but state law allows patrons to do so. That makes the show’s decision a house rule, he said, and HPD policy prohibits its officers from enforcing house rules.

Yea, it was HPD. HCSO and Constables wear black uniforms and HPD wears Blue. I am from Houston, and have been a Paramedic running 911 in the area for a long time so I know what they look like. I started to go up to them and ask about the 30:06 signs and why they were there, but I figured that was a good way to get asked to leave. What was interesting were several dealers openly carrying. One was a CHL Instructor selling his classes. No badges showing and most were WAY to old to be active Police. One dealer had an AR-15 around his neck with a magazine in the gun. I'd be interested to know under what basis the guys were openly carrying. (Maybe that is their "business" location)
The article and the policy prohibiting HPD from working shows pertained to High Caliber.

Not sure why it would be any different for Premier. They're still being asked to enforce house rules.

There is no legal basis for dealers or others open carrying at shows. It is simply accepted and overlooked.
