Absolutely! The war on drugs is another war :banghead: that can't be won. Take the profit out of the illegal sales and the gang wars over money will evaporate pretty much as they did when Prohibition was lifted back in the 30's...IMO. I seriously doubt that there will be more dope fiends running around if the drugs were not illegal than there are already on our streets and in our neighborhoods.

A bit in jest but, if drug pushing was legalized & taxed, we'd now be arresting these "businessmen and women" on tax evasion instead of selling drugs :headscratch ;-) You think they'd so easily hand over a cut of their profits??

IF such a measure was actualized, I imagine there would be a a few new issues arise to contend with. It could end up being something that had good intentions but unintended consequences. I don't know. :???:
I think she is a thinly-disguised Libertarian. Keep in mind that she is by vocation an RN.

Her stance is that drugs take up too much social and economic effort to combat and that we should be addressing other issues with our resources. I kind of liked that. I don't approve of drugs, don't use them, but agree with her in principal.

Texgun: Did you watch her last night? Her response regarding "gun registration" was the only point where she appeared either ignorant of the law or actually flustered by a question. Not sure which.

Agreed. Of course then, instead of criticizing I thought I should give an alternative. But I nixed suggesting it because the cost of bullets can still add up :leaving :biggrinjester:

Texgun wrote:I watched the debate and recorded it. I will re-examine the engagement. Based on my observation/recollection, she was trying to quickly make a point about her solid support of gun rights. The commentator was probing Medina to determine where she would place limits on owning or carrying a firearm. Medina did not say that she wanted absolutely no government controls but it seemed to me that that was her intended message. Medina was trying to cover a lot of territory in a brief amount of time and that may have corrupted her message. I plan to contact her for clarification.
I think that she is a breath of fresh air in the political climate.
I totally agree.

Me too. Don't get me wrong, it is refreshing to have such a candidate.

I was just looking for details and as Texgun pointed out, there wasn't much time that she could have put forth those details.

When she said that, I said "huh?" That threw me too. Her saying that almost implies she's not aware there is no gun registration in Texas. And that disappointed me greatly.

Exactly. My husband and I looked at each other, surprised that she said that. I do hope that her intentions is to press the issue of Texas' sovereignty to combat Fed laws.

Purplehood, I think you're right. She does need to sit down and learn the details, especially if she's running on those particular issues. Now, she may be able to draw Texans to her with her broad ideas and progun talk (I like it and no property tax!). But for those of us who are intimate with gun legislation and details, she needs to have more to give. Otherwise, she'd be going into Austin without specific goals or plans where she can easily get stalemated. And that won't help us.

stash wrote:Did I misunderstand the question, the answer or what when Medina said she wanted to do away with gun registration? On a side note she seemed to do OK in my opinion for the first time out. That Dallas newspaper poll has her at 79%, Kay at 10% and Rick at 9%.
:headscratch What is your question?

She said she wants to do away with gun registration. What wasn't said however was that Texas has no gun registration. I did want to hear her elaborate on the specific gun issues she would address in Texas. That may have been a strategic move to hold that info close to her chest in order not to tip off opposition that would arise in the legislative process. Or she didn't have specifics to share. I'm curious how she intends to tackle federal gun laws.

Purplehood wrote:The Moderator: Absolutely thrilled to have the "honor" of asking Governor Perry a question. Any question.
The Old Dude: Was gunning for Senator Hutchinson. Don't think that he noticed that there were other people in the debate.
The Cute Hispanic Chick: Asked Deborah Medina about guns. Told the moderator that she didn't have to roll so many letter R's when introducing her.

Governor Perry: Fresh die-job on the hair. Compared himself to Ronald Reagan. Appeared to be continually unprepared and surprised by almost every question.
Deborah Medina: Knowledgeable. Level-headed and good delivery. Excellent presentation.
Senator Hutchinson: Why the downgrade from ranking Senator to Governor of Texas? Absolutely and unequivocally refused to answer Yes or No on the question regarding the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. Not to knock lawyers, but she is a perfect example of a lawyer not wanting to be pinned down for making a plain and simple statement.

Very amateur presentation of a debate. 19-year old Johns Hopkins student in audience asked a fairly intelligent question and completely stumped the Governor, who was not even aware of the Law/Act in question (though he was Lt. Governor at the time). Medina was aware and jumped on it.

haha Yeah, you could almost hear the cricket chirping by the look on his face when he babbled his answer.

Yes. And I know this prior to. I've heard of her before and was well aware of her position. I just applied the 'outing' to being on the debate. I apply it to myself. For example, you'll see my name all over the forums and I'm pretty open about my position on guns. But you stick me in real life, around real people and I feel very put on the spot when I'm not expecting to get a gun question or charge.

Odd, I know.

It's one thing to be progun, it's another when details are dug for. She might not be uncomfortable with detailed questions. I on the other hand am cautious about who's asking and why. :tiphat:

Re: Republican Governors debate

I was a bit irked about the personal gun inquiry of Medina. I wouldn't want to be outed on TV :smash:
