Almost the same wisdom I got from the mechanics at Honda Dealership Service department.

he's telling me that i need to change my timing belt because over the time, mostly due to the heat in Houston, it dries out the moisture in the belt. Apparently once it's too dry, it starts to crack and break.

Unfortunately I did study polymer chemistry quite a bit. Timing belt is made of rubber (polymer) mostly, which loses its original elasticity and strength through two ways: degradation (a series of chemical reactions mostly with oxygen) and physical stress (pulling and releasing). Moisture level in this kind of materials must be controlled at extremely low level. If not, it would help the belt lose its properties even faster!

I had to bite my tongue not to laugh or correct him.
