Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
Awesome - I love Tucker's holsters. Would love to buy one some day (the HF1). Thanks for the tips - I'll have to give the atom balm/wax a try - saw it on the shelf, but went with Satin Sheen per the guy at Tandy's advice. Not sure how well it protects from moisture - but then again, guns don't tend to like moisture anyway...

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
That looks awesome RiverRat! I love the color and the tooling! I'm not brave enough to try tooling yet... I can't really tell with the backside of your stitching, but one thing I noticed with my Boss was that the bobbin tension was set WAY too tight. Loosen the top two tensions all the way, then tighten per the manual. Something like two turns on the secondary, and one and a half on the primary - whatever the manual says. Loosen the bobbin thread until you can see the bobbin thread coming through the top side of the leather, then gradually turn the bobbin tension in 1/8th turn increments until the knot is recessed half-way down.
Can you share what color / technique you used to dye that holster?

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
I just finished this little guy up yesterday for my dad's boss... He let me borrow his 3" 1911 (my blue dummy gun hasn't arrived yet). It was a new pattern for me, so it could use some tweaking on the next one I make - like bringing the stitch line in closer to the gun in the left/right direction. Otherwise, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. The first pattern I made was WAAAAAY to wide, and much too long - that, or my cut line at the top was too high and I couldn't insert the gun far enough... Anyway, here it is. I was impressed with how much easier it was to carry a 3" aluminum framed 1911 when compared to my 4.25" stainless CBOB.

LOL - oops! How do some people get away with posting 45 minute videos (nutnfancy, for example)?

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
If anyone is interested, I just posted a video on my website under the "How's it Made?" section that demonstrates how I build an Avenger style holster. I'm no expert, but I've learned a lot from forums like these and know there is a shortage of process videos for those new to leather working. This is my attempt to help those out that are standing where I was just a few months ago.

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
That's a nice looking setup you've got there! Is that a screwdriver rack your edgers and such are in? I need to find a better way to store my tools. On my new bench, my "holster" tools just get laid up on the shelf. I probably need more of a portable box like a tackle box or art box, or tote of sorts as my table is 3" deep and about 43" tall, it's a little hard to reach the back wall... oops! Looks like you have great lighting on that back wall!

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
Nonsense! That's what this thread is all about! Sure, I may be trying to make a couple bucks so my wife can stay home with our new baby, but I still made my holsters in my garage on a little work bench with my kids riding scooters in circles behind me! Let's see what you got! I used to make my holsters on a little 4' wide counter that doubled as a reloading station.
Last weekend I built a mobile 3' x 8' table based off a design by Norm Abrams so I had room to breath and store hides underneath.
This is the hand-powered Tippmann Boss I just got to speed things up.

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
My finger tips are still numb - LOL. I agree - wish the backside looked at good as the front side. Figured the time savings was worth it though - if people want to pay extra for hand sewing, I guess that could always be an upgrade option. Otherwise, I'll save myself 4 hours of stitching time! Guess I need to focus on a better way to advertise these instead of posting them on boards. Think I already ticked off the 1911 board.

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
Thanks! I ended up buying a Boss. With their holiday sale, it was too good to pass up. I figured I could buy the Boss, use it for a while, and then sell it and upgrade without losing much (if any) money on the Boss. I watched a few Ebay ads, and they sold for dang near what a new one sells for! I wanted a Toro 3000, but we had some recent dr. bills (new baby, and one of our kids had an emergency appendectomy). The Boss was the least painful route. Plus, I like to sew REALLY slow. :)

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
I just finished these up this morning. Eventually I'll get around to ordering some thinner stuff so I can try lining them. Still working on a pocket holster for my dad's new Taurus TCP .380 - never made one before.

Re: Homemade Leather Holsters
There is a Tandy south of 635 a few miles east of the tollway - past 75, at about Plano Road. Look at the locations on the Tandy site and you'll find it in the Locations listing. The guy that runs it knows a lot, and is a precision rifle shooter. He'll talk your ear off! Very helpful. I work by the galleria, and it takes me about 15 minutes to get there.

Hey there! Just saw this on the Leatherworker.net. Nice to see you're a TexasCHL user too! I love how you used an accent color on your holster. I've been thinking about doing this on my next one.Baba Brad wrote:My newest. I actually did some decoration on this one. Basic pancake design for my SW40VE.
