Agree that Bass Pro is fine for standing target practice at 3-25 yds.mgtx wrote:I live in the Flower Mound/Grapevine area, and Quail Creek and Bass Pro are both about 15 minutes away from me. Would you guys recommend Bass Pro over Quail Creek? I am younger and new to the world of firearms. The handgun I want to shoot (the subcompact XD 9mm) is my first handgun. Previous guns were my dad's so this is the first one I have bought on my own.
I have shopped at bass pro before and I dunno if it was my band tshirt, the fact that I was younger, or the fact that I had long hair, but the guy at the handgun counter acted like I wasn't going to buy anything and that I was some sort of problem or hoodlum. I asked him if he had a type of gun and he said "NO" in a tone that said "go away".
I worry that they'll freak out on me if I stroll up to Bass Pro with a gun case and boxes of ammo. People see a young guy with long hair and they immediately assume he's a druggie or a depressed angry kid out to cause trouble.
Anyway, it sounds like Bass Pro will still be a better choice than Quail Creek.
Relatively cheap, MUCH cooler than what's outside (at least, during this time of year).
As to the possible treatment based upon one's appearance - I don't have long hair, and while my wife still says I still "act like I'm 16", I'm a bit older - and the last time I went the folks at the front entry had to trigger-lock all of my guns prior to going into the store/range...and count the ammo boxes, magazines. Unusual - but then so's a pistol range inside of a retail store. Just so you'll know what to expect.
You're actually nearby to the Dallas Pistol club - it's a private shooting club probably 5-6 miles east of Bass Pro on Belt Line Rd.
On most weekends, they have some pretty low-key (beginner friendly) competitions open to general public.
Recommend the 3rd & 4th Sunday steel plate matches. Your XD9 subcompact would work fine.
