I find that it is kinda funny that they even measure how far you attempt to retreat before you stand your ground. Very obviously self-defense.

The reason investigators do so is so that the full measure of truth comes out, regardless of where the chips fall.

In this case, merely reporting that the victim retreated before firing would leave that statement open to a variety of interpretations ranging from a step or two to infinity. Forensic measurement takes the guesswork and interpretation out of it and clearly indicates that the victim made a very strong effort to disengage before using deadly force to defend himself. This is an important point that a prosecutor will examine closely before making a decision whether or not to prosecute a case involving defensive use of deadly force.
