A cheap $89 safe from academy/wal-mart screwed into the studs is an option for upstairs apartment living. I lived in a second floor apartment for years and you never know when the maintenance man or porter will end up in your living space! I was in the gym one night in my apartment, which was attached to the lease office. Someone forgot to close the door that connected the two and I noticed a ring of everyone's apartment keys hanging out in the open for anyone to take! Scary when you think about who might have access to your goods. Anything locked can help keep people honest.
